Velshi, who was born in Nairobi and was raised in Toronto, earned a degree in religion from Queen’s University in Canada. In 2016, his alma institution bestowed upon him an honorary Doctorate of Laws. Between Philadelphia and New York City, Velshi divides his time.

Serving on the boards of the National Constitution Centre, the Chicago History Museum, the X-Prize Foundation, the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism, the Philadelphia Citizen, and the Council on Foreign Relations, Velshi is an active member of the community.
