Alka Yagnik was born on 20 March 1966 in Kolkata, India (57 years old as of 2023). Her mother, Shubha Yagnik, is also an Indian classical music singer and trained Alka to sing since she was a child. She was educated at the Modern Girls High School in Kolkata, India. She started singing for Akashvani (All India Radio) at the age of six, translating devotional songs for the radio station. At the age of 10, she came to Mumbai as a child singer. She was told to wait until her voice matured. Her zodiac sign/sun sign is Pisces.

She started singing on Kolkata radio at the age of six. She started her Bollywood career in 1979 with just a few lines from Rasjshri’s song “Payal ki Jhankar”
Next up was “Mere Angne Mein” which proved to be a hit. Her first solo number was “Hum Tum Rahenge” for Rajesh Roshan in Hamari Bahu Alka (1982). She finally got her first break with the song “Ek Do Teen” from the movie “Tezaab”. She not only sings in Urdu-Hindi but also in other languages including Gujarati, Awadhi, Odiya, Assamese, Meitei, Rajasthani, Bengali , Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, English and Malayalam. She has collaborated with almost all the most famous Indian composers, from Kalyanji-Anandji to Sandesh Shandilya and many more.
In her career that spans three decades, she has sung various songs with singers like Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, Sonu Nigam, Shaan and others. Throughout her career, she sang 2,486 Hindi songs in 1,114 films. She is said to be Baolai after Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar The fifth most prolific singer in the history of music.

- The song “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” from the 1993 movie “Khalnayak” is the biggest hit of this century, but it is also a controversial song. The song was criticized for its sentimental and double-meaning lyrics. The song was considered vulgar and was opposed by 42 political parties. It was even banned from being played on Doordarshan and All India Radio.
