All About Angel Reese’s Brother Julian Reese

Angel Reese is known for her skills on the court, but the Louisiana State University basketball star has always had a competitive streak, starting with her brother Julian Reese.

The LSU forward and her brother grew up playing basketball in Baltimore, Maryland at Saint Frances Academy. Julian was born on June 30, 2003, just over a year after Angel, to Michael Reese and Angel Webb Reese.

Angel and Julian have always been close and encouraged each other to be better athletes, creating a drive in both of them from a young age.

“Everything was always a competition with my little brother,” Angel told What’s Up? in March 2022. “We had a basketball court in front of our house and it was always very competitive and intense. We played together all the time. It helped shape me into who I am now.”

From playing basketball together as kids to attending the University of Maryland, here’s everything you need to know about Angel Reese’s brother Julian.

They grew up in Maryland

Although not born in Baltimore, both Angel and Julian attended school there, playing for Saint Frances Academy.

“Our school was literally across the street from the prison,” Angel said Women’s health in February 2024. “I was lucky enough to have the skills and I was able to get out of there.”

In the October 2023 March Madness YouTube Q&A, the interviewer asked both siblings the same question — and they gave hilariously opposite answers.

When asked who always won when they were little, both Angel and Julian said it themselves. When they told Angel that Julian said he would beat her 100 to 20, she said, “100 to 20?! He’s gone crazy. He knows I have a better shoe, but he buys expensive things.”

They both told each other when asked who was their parents’ favorite, but they agreed that Angel was a hassle.

“I was probably the trouble maker because I would do it and he would get in trouble for it,” she said.

Before Angel became a star at LSU, she played two years at Maryland. A year after she started school, her brother followed in her footsteps.

The siblings planned a sweet surprise for their mom when Julian got engaged on Mother’s Day 2020. Julian said Baltimore Sun that he called his mom downstairs and handed her a black sweatshirt that had a picture of Julian and Angel visiting Maryland on the front and the word “committed” on the back.

“It meant a lot to me,” Julian told the paper in June 2020. “I felt like it [my mom’s] also a top pick, so I think it would make a good surprise for Mother’s Day.”

Both Angel and Reese committed before they graduated high school, so neither knew the pressure or expectations they would face playing at the same school.

“That’s a really good story,” said their mom. “However, I think it puts different pressures on both of them. As for Angel, she’s so highly ranked, so there’s a lot of pressure on her to be good right away. And for Julian, he plays in the same school where his sister is already famous. So he is expected to be good.”

He is a starting forward on the University of Maryland basketball team

Julian is currently a forward for the University of Maryland, where he has played three seasons so far, starting as a freshman. In his years with the program, he has proven to be a valuable defensive player, putting Maryland in the 97th percentile of defense when he is on the field.

“He knows our drop coverage very well. He is a smart basketball player. So it makes everybody else’s life a little bit easier,” coach Kevin Willard told The Diamondback in March 2024. “And he’s 6-foot-10, he’s physical and he throws his body, which really helps in this league.”

In the 2023-2024 season, Julian had the 13th most minutes played in the Big Ten, proving he is indispensable to the team, but his success amid Maryland’s struggles has fans clamoring for him to enter the transfer window.

“Just focus on the task at hand,” Julian told the news outlet in response to the rumours. “I like my boys here, I’m just with them and I don’t worry about that kind of stuff.”

Angel is watching over him

After the NCAA approved Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) contracts in 2021, Angel immediately began taking advantage of the opportunities presented to her, including her brother in her endeavors.

She said Sports Illustrated in March 2022 that she always planned to sign contracts with Julian and that whenever companies tell her they are looking for a male athlete as a partner, she suggests her brother.

“They ask, ‘Do you know any players?’ And I’m like, ‘My brother?’ ” she said. “I try to involve him in as many jobs as possible because one day I will be able to leave here [Maryland], we hope we can sign with the same agency and do everything together, and my mom can be there. I think it will be easy for both of us.”

Their mum described Julian as “relaxed”

Angel and Julian’s mom said Sports Illustrated that while Angel has a “very strong personality”, Julian is more “relaxed”.

“You will see him, certainly, before you hear him,” she said. “He is not a young man of many words.”

An example of his relaxed attitude occurred when the siblings signed Tom Brady. While Angel couldn’t contain her excitement, Julian kept a more poker face.

“The Tom Brady deal, when I found out about it, I said, ‘You’re going to New York!’ They’ll take you there—first class!’ ” she said. “He was so nonchalant about it. I said, ‘You represent Tom Brady! Tom Brady!’ ”
