After about 30 years of marriage, Second act the star’s mom and dad told her and her siblings to go their separate ways. It was a painful memory to revisit, Jennifer revealed W magazine in 2013 during a visit to the block where she grew up.

“I was nervous to come here today,” she said as she approached the small two-story house where she grew up. She refused to knock on the door with the explanation that her last memories in that space are difficult to digest.

Jennifer had her dad’s encouragement for everything, she explained on Today show in 2016. The entertainer’s father expressed unconditional love for her throughout her life, helping her feel seen and supported in her personal and professional life.

“I feel like he’s always been proud because I was like a running track when I was 9 or 10,” she told host Hoda Kotb. “He was like, ‘My daughter runs track!’ … It just didn’t matter to him. He was just proud of me.”

During the conversation with Today show hosts Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, Jennifer’s mom revealed that she “knew” her daughter would “always get back together” with her current husband, Ben Affleck.

“Because I prayed for 20 years,” she added, causing Jennifer to roll her eyes at the comment.

The singer famously dated Gone Girl star after meeting at Gigli set in the early 2000s. Their high-profile relationship lasted two years before they broke off their engagement in 2004 and went their separate ways.

More than 15 years later – after both married and divorced other partners, with whom they had children – the couple went public with their on-again, off-again love in July 2021. David has never shied away from showing his pride in his daughter, from celebrating her childhood track meets to her various business ventures. For Father’s Day in June 2023, he revealed that he is a fan of her Delola cocktail brand.

The father-daughter duo talked about cocktails in an Instagram video showing David sipping one of the low-alcohol drinks.

“Dad, what was the first thing you asked me when you came?” Jennifer says in the recording.

“Delola,” he replies with a grin, noting that he’s enjoying the paloma in the clip. “This was right. This lady knew what she was doing.”

In the video, she wishes her dad a happy Father’s Day and tells him she loves him. “Thank you, honey, I love you more,” he says.

Although Guadalupe’s encouragement was a pillar in Jennifer’s life and career, she was not always sympathetic to her daughter’s chosen career. When the star-to-be first revealed that she wanted to pursue dance, she and her mom first “fell”.

In addition to spending plenty of quality family time with Jennifer and her children, Guadalupe made frequent public appearances with her daughter, joining her on talk shows and even singing alongside her on stage.

The two shared a particularly special moment while filming Global Citizen’s Vax Live: A Concert to Reunify the World in May 2021, where Guadalupe accompanied Jennifer on stage to sing a rendition of “Sweet Caroline” — but changed the lyrics to “Sweet Jennifer.”

The pop star revealed that the song has sentimental value to her as her mum used to sing her the song as a lullaby while rocking her when she was a baby.

Guadalupe played a key role in developing the star’s passion for performing, Jennifer said while accepting the 2020 Icon Award. Board Women in Music event.
