All About Luke Combs’ Parents, Rhonda and Chester Combs

Luke Combs knows he was lucky with his parents, Rhonda Combs and Chester Combs.

The “She Got The Best of Me” singer-songwriter has broken records and headlined tours many people only dream of, but at the center of his crazy universe are his parents, who help keep him grounded and humble.

Rhonda and Chester are North Carolina natives. They welcomed Luke on March 2, 1990 in Huntersville and later moved to Asheville, where they still live today. The country artist has repeatedly spoken openly about what it was like to grow up in a working-class family. During the question and answer session with Rolling stone at CMA Fest 2019, Luke said that watching his parents work full-time and save every penny taught him a lot about money and living frugally — both values he still holds close as he raises a family himself.

“My parents were always great at living within their means and not buying anything they couldn’t afford. I didn’t realize how important it was until I started working. My parents always told me, ‘If you want something and you can’t afford it, just don’t get it,'” said Luke as he celebrated the release of his EP Prequelby Boot.

Luke’s career may be at its peak, but getting old the artist says that the greatest reward is being able to repay his parents for all the sacrifices they made for his upbringing.

“I had to help them with some bills that they had, and my parents and I didn’t travel much growing up. I got to take them to a lot of places they’d never been and let them experience a lot of things they’d never experienced, so it was it was definitely the best thing,” he said.

The couple raised their only son in Asheville, North Carolina, after moving from Huntersville — about two hours southeast, just outside of Charlotte — when Luke was 8. Rhonda and Chester still live in Asheville, and their home is the same family home where Luke grew up.

While appearing on The Marty Smith Podcast, Luke explained how he came from a blue-collar town of humble beginnings. “Obviously my parents worked hard to provide us with everything we needed. I definitely wasn’t the kid who got everything he wanted,” he said. “I didn’t know anything else. We lived in a neighborhood where everyone else was the same… I didn’t have a friend that I would consider ‘rich’ at the time until tenth grade or something.”

When the big paychecks started rolling in, Luke made two big investments: he bought himself a new truck and paid off his parents’ mortgage. Speaking to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the country star said it was the least he could do after all the sacrifices his parents made to help him live his dream.

“I remember calling my parents and saying, ‘I’m paying off your house.’ And they said, ‘What? You can not. Not. Do not do it.’ And I said, ‘No. I’m doing it. That’s what I do.’ So I bought myself a truck and paid off my parents’ house first,” he recalled during the interview.

“It was the first thing I did, man. I mean, I had to. I had to because you understand how hard it is… I mean, we didn’t have a lot of money, man. We are not. My parents were very good at making it look like we were doing well. And we did well. I had everything I needed and little of what I wanted. I’ll put it this way,” he explained.

On being able to do this for his parents, Luke added, “It was the best thing ever.”

“I remember when I was 5 years old … my dad had a 1988 Ford F-150 that was brown with a brown camper on it,” he began. “He played me all kinds of music, and one of the first songs I remember hearing was on a cassette, I love this whole album, and there was one song I really liked, and it was called ‘Fast Car.’ ”

“And that song has meant a lot to me for the rest of my life since then. I always think about my dad when it comes to that and how we spend time together,” he added.

For the artist “Beautiful Crazy”, family has always been of utmost importance. When the opportunity came to return to his parents and help them secure financial freedom, Luke jumped at the chance. “I’ve helped both of my parents retire over the last year, which has been a really amazing experience,” Combs revealed during an interview with CMT. He also gave his parents a new Ford Fusion a few years ago.

Being able to help his parents retire more easily benefited him as well, Luke noted. “That decision was purely about being able to spend more time with my parents as they get older. My mom retired literally two weeks ago. So watching that was not only a pleasure for me, but a great way for them to have financial freedom and being able to get out there and experience some of these great things that I can do, with me,” he said. “Which I wouldn’t trade for anything.”

She’s out there, dancing up and down altars and stuff… she’s great.”

My parents have always been very supportive,” he continued. “They try to come to as many shows as possible.”

They were there to watch their son headline Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium in 2018. Since retiring, the couple have been able to join Luke on the road even more. “Obviously the Ryman was special, so they came both nights, drove up from Asheville and stayed with me in my apartment in the guest room. I was delighted that they were there,” said Luke.

Rhonda and Chester are Luke’s real-life superheroes

“My superheroes are my parents, they did a lot for me growing up and I think I turned out good. And I think in today’s crazy world, that in itself is a pretty amazing accomplishment,” Luke said during the 2021 ACM Awards press conference, according to radio station 102.5.

The “When It Rains It Pours” singer-songwriter continued to share the values his parents passed on to him, including the importance of having a strong group of people in his corner.

“I think my parents instilled a lot of good things in me. You know, treating others the way you want to be treated. I think that is a very important thing and that surrounding yourself with the right people is always something that is very important. Having a lot of really good friends around. And because I’m generally a good person, I think those are some skills that have served me well and I have my parents to thank,” he said.
