All About Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Son, Actor Cooper Hoffman

Cooper Hoffman is following in the footsteps of his late father, Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The Hunger Games the actor and his partner, producer Mimi O’Donnell, welcomed Cooper in 2003 and raised him in New York. Although he is the son of an Oscar-winning star, Cooper said he never considered acting as a future profession.

“I don’t think I ever considered it at all,” the young actor told The Associated Press in 2022. “I was always kind of afraid to enter that arena because my dad did it so well.”

In 2014, when Cooper was 10, Philip died — years later, Cooper thought about connecting with his father’s memory through acting. In 2021, he started his Hollywood career in a film by Paul Thomas Anderson Licorice pizza and told the AP about his father’s influence on his work.

“In a weird way, it almost felt like I was stepping into my dad’s shoes,” Cooper said of the shoot. “That was indeed the feeling: Maybe that’s how he felt. It was a strange out-of-body experience. I felt incredibly close to my dad throughout the entire filming process.”

He made his acting debut in Licorice pizza

Although Cooper had no acting experience at the time, Anderson cast him in the 2021 drama. Licorice pizza. In an interview with S. 2022 W magazine, Cooper recalled how he landed the role.

“The first time I heard about Licorice pizza when Paul called me and told me to read the script. I thought it was weird, but I read it anyway and loved every second of it,” he said. “I read with him, and I fell even more in love with Paul, and I fell in love with the script and the acting.”

Cooper was cast in the lead role, starring alongside major Hollywood veterans such as Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper and Tom Waits. The film became one of the most celebrated of the year and received three Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

He was afraid to start acting

Licorice pizza was Cooper’s first role and he was understandably intimidated at first.

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt more nervous in my life,” Cooper told the AP. “I was shaking in the first frame. Paul obviously didn’t use it because I stuttered.

Anderson said he didn’t set out to cast Cooper, but ended up casting him over other more experienced young actors because he liked Cooper’s energy and presence.

“There were some talented ones that I met,” Anderson said Diversity 2021. “But most of them seemed over-trained, over-educated and over-ambitious already at a young age, which was not interesting to me.”

He received a Golden Globe nomination

Despite his initial nerves, Cooper’s performance in the Licorice pizza he was well received.

Cooper received the National Board of Review Award for Best Performance of 2021 along with two other nominations: Best Young Performer at the Critics’ Choice Awards and Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.

He has two sisters

In the essay for 2017 VogueCooper’s mother Mimi reflected on his birth on March 20, 2003.

“I remember the doctor cutting the umbilical cord and giving the baby to Phil. We hugged and kissed and cried – he was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen,” she explained. “Phil was beaming with uncontrollable joy.”

In 2006, Cooper’s younger sister Tallulah was born, and in 2008, Cooper’s sister Willa was born. Both of his sisters had small cameo roles in Licorice pizzamaking the film a family affair.

His father also worked with Paul Thomas Anderson

Cooper’s role in Licorice pizza it wasn’t the first time the Hoffman family worked with the acclaimed director. Philip starred in many of Anderson’s films, including Heavy eight (1996), Boogie nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), Punch-Drunk Love (2002) and the master (2012).

Anderson’s films – especially those starring Philip – had a big influence on Cooper growing up.

“Boogie nights he definitely made an impression on me. I love all of Paul’s movies,” he said W magazine. “But the Paul movie that I adore so much is probably both the masterwhich I know I am biased against, or Punch-Drunk Love.”

Anderson said Diversity that these professional experiences helped create a deep bond between his and Philip’s family. The director shared that his son, Jack, had a history of making home movies with Cooper.

He feels connected to his father through acting

As the son of an award-winning and beloved actor, many fans compared Cooper’s acting debut to Philip’s work. Review in Parade he noted that viewers could “see his father’s DNA” in Cooper Licorice pizza performance.

In addition to their similarities, working with Anderson helped Cooper develop a bond with his late father as Philip and Anderson were longtime collaborators.

His mother is also prominent in Hollywood

Cooper’s mom Mimi also has a long career in the entertainment industry. She met Philip in 1999 when he interviewed her to design costumes for a play he was directing; not long after that she started working in Saturday night live.

Among her other credits is the film Jack drives the boat (2010), which starred Philip, and the series hosted by Patrick Wilson A gifted man.

Mimi has since moved into production, and in 2022 she became head of scripted fiction at Spotify. She produced audio dramas like Two princeswhich she also directed, and Red border.

In 2023, Mimi returned to visual storytelling and executive production Horror Dolores Roachan Amazon Prime Video horror series based on the podcast series of the same name.

He is ready to act in more films

After great success in Licorice pizza, Cooper was soon cast in high-profile films. IN Wildcat, which premiered in September 2023 at the Toronto International Film Festival, starred opposite Maya Hawke. The biopic, directed by Ethan Hawke, explores the life of Southern Gothic writer Flannery O’Connor.

Cooper was also added to the film Old guy alongside Christoph Waltz and Lucy Liu as a young assassin who is trained by an older, wiser hitman.

In January 2024, Cooper was cast opposite Rachel Sennott and Gabriel LaBelle in the biographical comedy SNL 1975 on the origins of the late-night show.
