Alyson Hannigan had a lot more to overcome than nerves before Tuesday’s episode Dancing with the stars.
The How I Met Your Mother actress, 43, revealed to PEOPLE that she felt “really sick” with a migraine ahead of filming the series and didn’t know if she would even be able to dance.
I was very, very sick this morning, Hannigan told PEOPLE. “I had a migraine that was really knocking me out and, yeah, I couldn’t even keep fluids down. I didn’t think I would make it today.”
Although she said she was “feeling a lot better” at the end of the night, her dance partner Sasha Farber said he was very concerned when he spoke to her earlier in the day.

“As soon as I saw Alyson on my phone in the [6:45 a.m.]I was, like, Something is wrong,Farber said. “And just her voice… as soon as I heard her voice, I thought, Oh, that’s it. And she cried.”
“She couldn’t get out of bed. She couldn’t come to work,” he continued. “So actually, fun fact: usually when we get to work, we run it twice and then take the clothes out. She didn’t run because she couldn’t walk – so she missed that whole rehearsal.”
Meanwhile, Hannigan said she struggled to overcome illness in her trailer in the hours before the show.
“I was in my trailer in the fetal position,” she explained. “It was horrible. I thought I couldn’t take 10 steps without throwing up.”

While Hannigan noted that her official diagnosis was a “really bad migraine,” she said she learned a lot more about how such a simple thing can affect her health.
“Supposedly migraines, you can also throw up. But I didn’t know that,” she explained. “And I just said, ‘But I didn’t have a fever. I didn’t have COVID, all that stuff. But, yes, apparently migraines can get that serious. And now I know.”
As for how she eventually recovered enough to take center stage in the ballroom on Monday night, her partner, 39, credited it to “medicine” as well as her strong will to overcome her illness to deliver a solid performance (which she was brought by the judge’s assessment 24).
“This is such a hard worker and she has so much, she has so much soul and power, and she worked so hard,” he said. “That’s why she floated on a glittering canoe tonight.”
