dispute
Suspected of inciting religious hatred
In April 2022, the Rajasthan police registered two separate FIRs against News18 anchor Aman Chopra, accusing him of promoting religious hatred by peddling fake news. While hosting a live show, he reportedly compared the demolition of a 300-year-old temple in Alwar with the partial demolition of a mosque in Jahangirpuri.
In the show he said,
Jahangirpuri retaliated by attacking Mahadev. Please listen carefully to what I say. “
He added,
Is this a coincidence? Two days ago, a mosque was bulldozed in Jahangirpuri and today three temples were demolished in Alwar, Rajasthan. One temple is 300 years old. Is it to avenge Jahangir Puri? “
Chopra ignored the fact that the temple was razed to the ground at the behest of the BJP-run Alwar Municipal Corporation. Shortly after the show aired, #ArrestAmanChopra began trending on Twitter. Later, two FIRs were registered under Section 153 (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc. and engaging in conduct prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) in Bundi and Dungarpur districts, 295 (injury or defilement of a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 295-A (intentional and malicious conduct with intent to outrage religious feelings), 120 B (punishment for criminal conspiracy), 124 A (sedition) and 67 ( Imprisoned for non-payment of fine).
