A “technical issue” grounded all US American Airlines (AA) flights this Christmas Eve.
The airline shared the news via X — formerly Twitter — posting, “We are currently experiencing a technical issue with all American Airlines flights.”
They added that passenger safety is their “highest priority” and that once the situation is resolved, people will be on their way to their destinations. According to NBC News, the shutdown was lifted at 8 a.m. ET.
Ahead of the resolution, an AA spokesperson told CNN they were working to “resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” They also apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the interrupted trip during the holiday season.

According to an alert from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), AA has requested a ground stop for all of its flights. CNN reported that the FAA referred all inquiries about the incident to the airline.
When asked to provide a timeline for the initial disruption in the comments section of their X post, a spokesperson for the airline said they were “trying to fix it as soon as possible.”
Another traveler complained about his ruined holiday plans, posting: “What about connecting flights? I really don’t want our family vacation to be ruined because of this.”
