Ryan Murphy’s verse expands with FX American sports story.
After the success of anthology series such as American Horror Story and American crime storythe new series will focus “on a prominent event and/or figure in the world of sports, but seen through today’s lenses and told through multiple perspectives,” per Diversity.
The series was originally announced in August 2021, but various cast members were confirmed recently after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended.
Based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc from The Boston Globe and Wondery, the first season will follow the “rise and fall” of Hernandez, a former New England Patriots tight end who was convicted of murder and later died by suicide in prison in 2017 at the age of 27.

A ballad about songbirds and snakes star Josh Andrés Rivera is set to play an NFL athlete after wowing producers with his audition.
“He stole the role,” producer Nina Jacobson told IndieWire. “He is well-grounded, likable, natural and persuasive, super prepared. I was thrilled when they brought a bunch of people and let Josh climb to the top, which I knew he would. And we had him tattooed all over. He was trained to be huge and muscular; he loved to lift weights,” said Fr story from the west side actor.
The cast also includes Patrick Schwarzenegger as Tim Tebow (who played football with Hernandez at the University of Florida) and Lindsay Mendez as Tanya Singleton (Hernandez’s cousin).

The new series will be developed by Stu Zicherman (Americans), who will also be an executive producer.

The series features a long list of executive producers, including Murphy, Zicherman, Brad Falchuk, Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall and Wondery’s Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy and The Boston GlobeLinda Pizzuti Henry and Ira Napoliello, trans The Hollywood Reporter.
When is it American sports story movie?
In January 2023, FX chief John Landgraf revealed that the series was “moving towards production” as they had “a pretty complete set of scripts”. Filming reportedly began later that year in New Jersey, but was eventually halted due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. It’s unclear when filming will resume now that the SAG-AFTRA strike has ended.
When will American sports story be released?

The official release date of the series has not been announced. However, with production currently in limbo, it’s likely that the series won’t premiere until late 2024.
Will there be a second season? American sports story?
Although it’s unclear if FX will order another season American sports storyother American story a spinoff is in the works.
When American sports story announced in August 2021, FX also revealed plans for American love storywith the first season covering the tumultuous courtship and marriage of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
