The word itihasa – iti-ha-aasa means “So it is.” The definition is “Itihasa is narrated in katha format based on past happenings; its purpose is to serve the purpose of the four purusharthas (Dharma, Artha, Kaama, Moksha ) provides guidance so that they can live productive lives. In this sense, itihasa is not just a record of the past but a commentary on what happened in the past, providing lessons for our own lives.
