Amit Lodha is a 1998-batch officer of Bihar Police Service in India. He is famous for the arrest of notorious gangster Ashok Mahto, known as Gabbar Singh of Sheikhpura, and his associate Pintu Mahto. The web series “Kaki: Bihar” based on his life was released on Netflix on November 25, 2022.

Amit Lodha was born on Friday, February 22, 1974, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan (48 years; as of 2022). His zodiac sign is Pisces. He grew up in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where his father worked as a doctor at Sawai Mansingh Hospital. Amit attended St. Xavier’s School in Jaipur. Growing up, Amit idolized civil servants as his maternal grandfather was an IAS officer. He enrolled (after clearing the entrance exam in the first attempt) at IIT Delhi to pursue a B.Sc.
When he joined IIT Delhi, he was tortured by his seniors for about 15 days. Soon, he began to struggle with the “inferiority complex” that had overwhelmed him since joining IIT. Lodha labeled his IIT journey as “terrible” in an interview,
I failed at everything. I suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts. I thought I was the unluckiest person in the world. I had the worst grades and poor relationships. My friends like me because I am kind-hearted. But even they stayed away from me because I was quiet and was considered weird. The go-to guy who’s never been invited to a party or shared a room. I could never fit in. “
After completing his bachelor’s degree in technology, Amit decided to appear for the UPSC examination. In 1998, he passed the civil service examination and became a police officer in Bihar, India.

After completing his training with the Indian Police Service, Amit Lodha was posted to Bihar as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. At the time, Bihar was battling rising crime rates – theft, kidnapping and murder. People fled the state in search of opportunity. Amit recalled that phase of the interview and said:
Even the elite like doctors, engineers and businessmen are hesitant to visit Bihar. They are scared because no one knows when they or their family members will be kidnapped, or worse, shot. “
As an IPS officer, Amit solved several cases with great ease. His working style is liked by the people of Bihar which makes him a popular police officer in the area. In line with his image as a public servant, he asked people in his jurisdiction to call his landline directly if they have any questions. In May 2006, about 15 people were killed in two nights in Sheikhpura. Police suspected that Gabbar Singh and Ashok Mahto of Sheikhpura and their allies Pintu Pintu Mahto. Amit was appointed to take charge of the case. Talking about the situation in Sheikhpura, Amit said,
Sheikhpura was filled with a war-like atmosphere. They killed a sitting MLA and MP and a neighborhood development officer. “
Apparently, Ashok has around 30 murder and kidnapping cases on his hands. He was also the mastermind behind the infamous Nawada prison break in 2002. With his courage and clever thinking, Amit devised a foolproof plan to capture Ashok Mahto. He arrested the gangster and his assistant after a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase that spanned multiple states and lasted about three months. The incident made him a national star. In an interview, he recalled the incident and said:
To catch Ashok Mahto, I had to think like a criminal. What was he thinking about? What’s his next move? I read about his case and researched how he committed the crime. On August 13, we arrested him. “
In 2008, Amit successfully arrested nine Naxalites in Rampur. He subsequently held various postings in the districts of Nalanda, Begusarai, Sheikhpura, Muzaffarpur and Gaya, which are known to be hotbeds of crime. He served Bihar for about 14 years and was a member of the central delegation. In 2012, Amit was appointed as the Director General of BSF Rajasthan Border Police, replacing Anil Paliwal. He also has additional responsibility for the training center there. He served there for about seven years and then returned to Bihar. To unleash the potential of Bihar’s youth, Amit has launched several initiatives such as Sambhav and Bharat Ke Veer.

Charged with corruption and criminal conspiracy
In December 2022, Amit was accused of corruption by the Bihar police and suspected of using his position for financial gain. The Economic Offenses Wing of the Bihar Police filed a complaint against Lodha, alleging that while Amit was serving as an IPS officer, he entered into a monetary agreement with Friday Story Teller, the production company of the Netflix series Khakee: The Bihar Chapter. As per the agreement, Amit charges only Rs. 1. However, the police claimed that there was a transaction of Rs. There was Rs 38.25 lakh in his wife’s account. He was subsequently booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and Sections 120(B) and 168 (unlawful carrying on of trade by public servant) relating to criminal conspiracy. On December 9, 2022, he was suspended.

- In his book Bihar Diaries, Amit shared an anecdote from when he was posted at Sheikhpura. He wrote,
There once was a girl who often called me and said that I like you very much. That girl’s name is Beauty Kumari. The girl told me she wanted to meet and one day she brought her father. She came to my office. When I saw that girl, she was the complete opposite of her name. After coming to my office, the girl sent her father out, so I was a little shocked and scared to hear the news.
