The bronze medal in the championship qualified him for the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships, but he was defeated in the quarter-finals by Hassanboy Dusmatov (Uzbekistan). He came back strong after the loss and won a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. That same year, Pongal competed in the Asian Games and won the gold medal after defeating Rio Olympic medalist Dusmatov (who had beaten his rival at the World Championships a year earlier).
In February 2018, he won a gold medal at the Strandzha Cup competition in Sofia.
