An Iranian hermit dubbed “the dirtiest man in the world” has died at the age of 94, seemingly shortly after taking a shower for the first time in more than six decades. Amou Haji is known for eating street meat and smoking a pipe filled with animal dung. ‘Amou Haji’ is a charming nickname for an elderly person. The hermit died at the age of 94 in a village in Dejgah, in the southern Fars region.
Haji lived in a hut made of slag and covered with soot because he hadn’t washed in years. According to locals, he had “adolescent emotional problems” that led him to make the risky choice not to shower. The Iranian is a nomad who feels that cleanliness disgusts him. His nickname has made him world famous and his life was even chronicled in a 2013 documentary called The Strange Life of Amou Haji. According to the Telegraph, locals forced him to take a shower a few months ago. He fell ill and died not long after.

After his death, Kailash “Kalua” Singh of Varanasi, India may hold the record for most days without a shower. Singh has not washed his hands in 30 years in response to “all the challenges that are facing the country”.
How important is the shower?
Traditionally, showering has been considered a general measure of cleanliness, and we can feel uncomfortable if we don’t shower for three or four days. According to experts, showering has both advantages and disadvantages. While there’s no one-size-fits-all shower regimen, most find regular cleaning unnecessary. In fact, it can be dangerous to your health. According to dermatologist Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand, MD, bathing regularly is a social responsibility. He goes on to say that this can deplete your skin’s natural protective oils, causing dryness and irritation.
According to Dr. Elizabeth:
“The notion that you need to shower daily to maintain personal cleanliness is a social norm and habit.” Regular long showers or baths can remove natural oils from your skin’s barrier. This can cause irritation and dryness of the skin.”
A common guideline is to shower every three days, but if your lifestyle requires more bathing, you can do so. However, you must ensure that the items used are gentle on the skin. On the other hand, not washing your hands can negatively impact your health and even your social life.
Although sweat itself has no odor, when combined with germs, it can produce some unpleasant odors. The bacteria on your skin gather and bind to everything they come in contact with. So, if you exercise or sweat a lot, wash it often. Other downsides include a build-up of germs, a build-up of dead skin, the possibility of fungal infections, a rash on the scalp, and the risk of getting worse if exposed to disease-causing microorganisms.
Bathing too often can also cause problems. Excessive exfoliation and frequent exposure to water can deplete the skin’s natural oils and healthy copper. Dry and damaged skin creates conditions for dangerous bacteria to enter the body and cause disease. There are a number of benefits to skipping showers for a day or two, such as saving liters of water, saving money on cleaning and hair care products, and avoiding single-use plastics. However, bathing for too long is generally not recommended.
