Amy Dowden reveals whether she’ll return to Strictly this year amid cancer treatment

Amy Dowden has confirmed she won’t be returning to Strictly Come Dancing as a pro this year as she updates her cancer treatment in an Instagram live video with breast cancer charity CoppaFeel! where she was joined by Paralympic rower and breast cancer survivor Erin Kennedy.

During Live, Amy shared that she’s been diagnosed with a “separate type of cancer” and will need chemotherapy, which unfortunately means she won’t be able to dance with her dance partner this year. Serious. However, she was told that thanks to chemotherapy, she had a high chance of “curing” the disease.

Professional dancer exclusively for HELLO! about her diagnosis in May. The Welsh-born dancer told us she discovered the lump on her chest while preparing for a honeymoon with husband Ben Jones.

“I was in the shower and felt a hard lump in my right breast,” she recalls. “I was in shock; I checked again. I thought, ‘Yeah, it could have something to do with the menstrual cycle or something. I decided to keep an eye on it for a few weeks. On vacation, applying lotion every day, I realized’.

Amy has confirmed that she won’t be dancing with a single celebrity on this year’s Serious show.

She continued: “Doctors explained to me that there are three stages and that three stages are the most aggressive, but they felt they had spotted me early and didn’t have to worry because stage 3 would happen in people my age.”

Amy is positive about her chances of returning to the serious dance floor, telling us that her initial main concern was when she started dancing again. In a private interview with MirrorShe explained: “If I had only had radiation, I would have returned to Serious this season. When the radiation was over, I was unstoppable, there was no pressure, but Serious left the door open. There’s a lot more work to be done.”

She went on to say, “I’m picturing myself on that Serious dance floor. I just got back to the ballroom with a live crowd, adrenaline and atmosphere. And the support of the whole Serious family.

“And if I have to have chemotherapy, I’ll be there in a way, even if I’m wearing a wig. I know great hairstyles with Serious. Whether it’s It Takes Two or I’m in Claudia’s area waiting for the points, I’ll be there.”

Amy received her first treatment last month and also underwent a mastectomy prior to fertility treatment.

Earlier this week, the dancer updated fans on her recovery during a fan Q&A session. “I’m restless, but I’m so grateful for the people around me. I’ll never be able to say thank you enough. I’m still waiting to be able to drive and dance (next week). [praying hands emoji]),” she replied.

She continued: “I have so many wonderful people around me that every day when I’m not working, I have [taken] give me breakfast, go for a walk, go to the studio, go to the hospital apartment, they tell me to stay with them to change the environment… whatever.

“Because I’m the one who needs to keep moving forward and those people know who they are and I’m not sure how optimistic I would be without them. They’re my medicine to heal and it’s important to have people around you to talk to and get you out of.”
