Anbumani Ramadoss is an Indian politician and a member of the Patali Makkal Kutch (PMK) party and an ally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He served as Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare in the Manmohan Singh government from 2004 to 2009.

After graduation, he worked as a doctor at the town government hospital in Nalalam, a small village near Tindivanam. After a year and a half, he quit his job as a doctor. He later joined Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), the political party in Tamil Nadu founded by his father in 1989, and became the party’s youth wing president. In 2004, Anbumani Ramadoss became a member of the Lok Sabha on the ticket of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) as part of the UPA. On May 22, 2004, Anbumani became the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare in the Manmohan Singh government. He served until March 29, 2009.
In 2005, the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) was established as a sub-mission of the National Health Mission (NHM) under the chairmanship of Anbumani Ramdoss. Its goal is to improve access to quality health care, especially for people living in rural areas, the poor, women and children. Jeffrey Sachs, head of the International Advisory Panel (IAP), praised the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and recommended that multiple national governments and United Nations agencies replicate NRHM in other countries, especially poor countries in Africa. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Dharmapuri constituency on a PMK ticket as part of the NDA and won by a margin of 77,146 votes. In 2016, he contested the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections from Penagaram constituency. PMK announced him as its chief ministerial candidate. However, he lost the election to Imbasekaran. DMK party PNP. In 2019, he contested the Lok Sabha election from Dharmapuri constituency on the ticket of PMK but lost by 70,753 votes. On July 11, 2019, Anbumani Ramadoss was elected as a Member of Parliament in the biennial federal assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. On May 28, 2022, he became the Chairman of Patali Makar Kutch (PMK) Party.

Unconventional removal of AIIMS director
In 2006, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare “Anbumani Ramadoss” sacked the Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) “Dr P. Venugopal” who was one of India’s foremost cardiologists. He alleged that Dr. P. Venugopal had violated the code of conduct for government employees by publicly accusing the government of interfering in the functioning of AIIMS. Dr. P. Venugopal was removed from office even before a committee set up by the government could look into the matter and render a verdict.
Arrested for hate speech
Anbumani Ramadoss was arrested by Kancheepuram police in Chennai in May 2013 in connection with an old case. He was charged in a 2012 hate speech case against him. On April 25, 2012, PMK cadres allegedly set fire to 10 Dalit houses in Marakannam. The PMK, however, denied the allegations. After the arrest of PMK leaders in 2013, PMK workers set fire to at least three buses and damaged over 100 government buses.
Charged with inciting caste hatred
In 2014, Anbumani Ramadoss was charged for allegedly trying to incite caste people. Anbumani and his supporters distributed CDs while campaigning in Dalmapuri constituency. The CDs were intended to alert the Vaniya community to the Malacañang violence and the controversial inter-caste marriages between Vaniya girls and Dalit youths. A case was registered against Ramadoss under IPC sections for offenses of inciting enmity between different groups, making remarks inciting public mischief and violating the Model Code of Conduct.
Corruption case
In 2014, Anbumani Ramadoss and four others were accused of abusing their authority in granting renewal permission to Rohilkhand Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) for the 2008-09 MBBS course. In 2012, he was involved in a similar case in which he allowed the Indore Inkers Medical College and Research Center (IMCHRC) to continue admissions without adequate faculty and clinical materials.
Arrested for violent protest
In July 2023, Anbumani Ramadoss and his supporters were detained by the police after a protest in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, turned violent with some PMK party workers allegedly pelting stones at the police. Ramados made a speech and asked the NLC (Nevili Lignite Company) to stop acquiring farmers’ land to expand mining projects.

- On July 14, 2006, Federal Minister of Health Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss received the Luther L. Terry Award from the American Cancer Society for international tobacco control efforts at the Ballroom of the Convention Center in Washington, USA.
- In August 2007, Rotary International awarded Anbumani Ramadoss the Polio Eradication Champion Award. Under his leadership, India successfully reduced type 1 polio and supported various polio eradication activities.
- On July 20, 2007, Dr. Samlee Plianbangchang, Regional Director, presented Anbumani Ramadoss with the WHO Director-General’s Special Award for Tobacco Control.

- He is the founder of the Tamil television channel Makkal TV. It was launched on September 6, 2006.
- Anbumani Ramadoss is the director of the NGO ‘Pasumai Thaayagam’. It is committed to protecting the environment and achieving ecologically sustainable development.
