Andrew Abbott’s career
Andrew began his swimming career in high school, where he excelled. In swimming, he was selected to the All-Piedmont District first team four times, was named to the All-State team twice and received four All-Piedmont District honors. Meanwhile, he continued to play baseball and captained the swim and baseball teams twice in a row.
During his high school athletic career, he earned All-Piedmont Academic Team honors in baseball and swimming four times each. He later made the decision to pursue baseball and was named State 5A and North Region Player of the Year in 2017.
Additionally, he was named Piedmont District Player of the Year and Conference 16 Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017. He was selected by the New York Yankees in the 2017 MLB Draft and won the Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year and PBR Player of the Year awards in the same year.
In 2018, he committed to the Virginia Cavaliers and was named a newspaper freshman All-American by Baseball America & Collegiate Baseball. He was also selected to the ACC All-Freshman team for his outstanding performance and record six saves, the most in the ACC.
He was named to the ACC All-Academic team the next year in 2019, along with five other teammates, and he struck out 59 batters in 44 innings as a sophomore. He was selected as a pitcher for the US collegiate national team and successfully led the group to set new records.
He recently ascended to No. 7 on D1 Baseball.com’s list of the 50 Greatest Pitchers in College Baseball, and this year, in 2021, he was named a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Third-Team Preseason All-American pitcher and Preseason Second-Team All-American.
