Andrew Garfield won’t be appearing on the big screen again as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man anytime soon.
“I’m going to disappoint you,” Garfield, 41, said GQ in a new interview published on Thursday, January 2, when asked about the rumors that he will appear in the fourth Spider-Man a movie starring Tom Holland. “Yes, no. But I know that from now on, no one will believe anything I say.”
Garfield’s comment refers to the times he denied acting Spider-Man: No Way Home before that movie hits theaters in 2021. Garfield did share his prerequisites for returning to the Marvel fold.
“If it was in line with my soul and it would be fun,” he said GQ. “Maybe at some point I’ll have five kids and I’ll have to start saving for college or something.”
In October, Garfield told PEOPLE that it would take a “great idea, a great concept” to play Peter Parker again. “Something that is surprising and strange and fun, joyful. It has to be valuable,” he said.
“I’m so happy they had the courage to do it. It’s such a great idea,” Garfield told PEOPLE of There’s no way home. “I would never have had such a foresight. So I’m really proud and happy to be a part of it. But if there’s something that can be invented and come up with that adds to the canon of that character, then sure.”

Holland’s take on Spider-Man debuted in 2016 Captain America: Civil Warwhich led to his first solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. Spider-Man: Far From Home followed in 2019 and There’s no way home 2021. It wasn’t clear if a fourth movie starring Holland was on the way until the actor told Jimmy Fallon that it was “happening.”

Garfield recently starred in the We live in timehis first film since 2021, and he will next star in Luca Guadagnino’s film After the Hunt with Julia Roberts. Meanwhile, Holland will star in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Homer adaptation Odyssey.
