Andy Jackson Wikipedia, poet, disability, books, poem – This Friday’s Poetry on Disquiet Hill will feature readings by Castlemaine poet Andy Jackson, who recently received the ALS Gold Medal and the Prime Minister’s Literary Award (Poetry) for his latest book, Human Watching. This is a unique opportunity to appreciate the poetry of one of Australia’s greatest poets.

In Jackson’s Human Appearance, the famed poet who lived with Marfan syndrome, which included severe spinal deformities, and whose poems give voice to those often considered “other” or outsiders, offers a groundbreaking insight into the experience of disability.
Most of the poetry in the book, according to the local poet, was written when he was finishing his doctorate. I published the book online at the end of 2021 and was thrilled to receive the ALS Gold Medal in July 2022, which doesn’t come with any monetary awards, but does come with a lot of accolades, according to Jackson.
In 2022 the book was also nominated for the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award and to top it off I received the Premier’s Literacy Award which was just amazing.
People stopped me on the street to congratulate me and the reaction was very moving, he said.
Jackson claimed that he first developed a passion for poetry in his early 20s. She attended readings and events in Melbourne to share and expand her work before continuing her education to hone her craft.
The local poet expressed his joy at being recognized for his work in such an illustrious company. It’s unbelievably great to finally have the chance to share your work (post-COVID) in public through readings in your community and elsewhere. Friday’s event and my participation in the upcoming Newcastle Writers’ Festival with an online presence is something I look forward to, he said.
Jackson expressed his gratitude for the latest award, saying it will allow him to “breathe” and focus on his work. “I also do a lot of teaching, mentoring and one-on-one mentoring through Writers Victoria and RMIT.
He said: “I am especially passionate about supporting young and emerging poets as they find their voice. Jackson added that he was pleased that efforts were being made to establish an Australian “poet laureate”.
It’s wonderful to see this initiative gain momentum with Writers Australia, a new literary funding body, taking over the process. Rather than a more formal approach, I would really like to see this take a community-focused approach,” he noted.
Jackson will give a 20-minute reading on Friday night, followed by an audience question-and-answer session and an encore. The event will start exactly at 18:00 and end at 19:00
Every first Friday of the month, Poetry on Agitation Hill presents poets from Melbourne, rural Victoria, the interstate and beyond at Castlemaine Uniting Church Chapel on Lyttleton Street. Boom Town Wine offers each customer a free glass of wine. The poet is compensated with a gift of $5.
Andy Jackson song
Bad blood, withered hands, crippled, out of place: I miss how small thoughts can be, and I am incomparable, only a dwarf because the so-called average man is taller. You should pass, but don’t. Have you ever thought about how swollen you look because of this?
height? When I walk or shop, I seem to be inspired. It’s fantastic to see you leave, you say, imagining the awakening in my body, the courage you need not to kill yourself, what. How do you live with that? That’s me wondering, absentmindedly eating a (wow!) sandwich.
In my house I tackled the cabinets and the oven, things we all love. I sleep in my bed (sometimes alone). At work, my cubicle is longer and wider than yours. True, this is not a song, but it was never meant for you.
