Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)
In 2018, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) shortlisted 30 experienced pilots for the Gaganyan mission. Scheduled to launch in 2025, the Gaganyaan mission is India’s first manned space mission and aims to send four astronauts into low-Earth orbit for three days before landing safely in the Indian Ocean. After a challenging selection process, by mid-2019, only 12 pilots remained from the original 30 astronaut candidates. Finally, four astronauts – Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Angad Pratap, Ajit Krishnan and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla – were selected for the Gaganyaan mission. The crew’s initial space training is conducted at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM), Bengaluru. Subsequently, they were sent to Russia’s Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center to receive advanced space training.
After 13 months of training, they returned to India. They underwent further evaluation and training at the Manned Space Flight Center in Bengaluru. Their space training ends in February 2024. On February 27, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented astronaut wings to the crew of the Gaganyan mission.
