Terry Neely, a 46-year-old cripple, was targeted when she lured him to her apartment in Phoenix, Arizona, where she tortured and killed him. Neely was forced to watch his own torture in the mirror as Simpson beat, stabbed and pulled out his teeth while he was confined to a wheelchair.
Neely’s autopsy revealed that he had been stabbed some 50 times, had his throat slit, and had a three-inch nail driven into his brain.
When Simpson was convicted, she claimed that she wanted to keep Neely alive for a week so she could torture him longer after pleading guilty to first-degree murder. She received a sentence of 14 years with a natural life sentence.
In a 2012 interview, Simpson calmly said that he did not regret killing Neely, claiming that he was a “snitch” who “got what he deserved”.
Asked about the murder of the 46-year-old woman, she said she did it because it was “necessary, just necessary” and that she “has no regrets at all.”
He claimed that after he brought the victim to the apartment, he “exposed him and killed him”, telling reporter Mike Watkiss that “everyone has a reason to kill.” Although it was not the result she was looking for, she added that she believes she should have been sentenced to death.
Simpson said that she wished she had more time to kill someone else, and that she was “a little bit upset that I won’t be able to, you know, kill any more thugs.”
In a 2012 interview, he stated, “If the opportunity arises, I look forward to killing again”, before shedding his icy demeanor and gleefully announcing that the interview would be “good shit” and requesting that Watkiss “let’s take a good look.”
The woman’s gruesome interview served as the model for serial killer Villanelle Jodie Comer on the hit TV series Killing Eve.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, author of Killing Eve, ‘fell into a Google hole’ while searching for female killers and came across Simpson’s interview in which she was shocked to witness such clear admission.
In the interview, Simpson was asked a series of questions, and Waller-Bridge’s idea of what the killer might do was upended by Simpson’s cold, direct and to the point answers. She commented: “She sounds more like a psychopath than anyone has ever sounded.”
That interview turned out to be a key part in the creation of the award-winning play Villanelle, which translated Villanelle from paper to screen.
