Who is Maximilian Schell, Angelina Jolie’s famous godfather?
Born in Vienna, Austria in 1930, Maximilian Schell is a Swiss actor, producer, writer and director. In a defining moment in his career, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Hans Rolfe in the American film. Judgment in Nuremberg, in 1961.

However, long before he hit Hollywood, Maximilian had his first roles in German films – many anti-war films – before earning the highest grossing in a number of Nazi-era films. The man in the glass cabin (1975) me Julia (1977) was particularly well received, earning him further Oscar nominations.
Among his many notable films, Maximilian also played A bridge too far (1977), iron cross (1977), Anne Frank’s Diary (1980), Stalin (1992), Deep impact (1998), I Bloom Brothers (2008).

In his decades-long career, Maximilian has acted alongside Hollywood legends such as Marlon Brando, Charlton Heston, Rosalind Russell, Peter Ustinov and Robert Duvall. He also worked with Angelina’s father, Jon Voight, on the 1974 horror film. Odessa’s profileand that’s probably how they became best friends.
It was clear that the two enjoyed working together on the project, as the following year Maximilian directed Jon in the German mystery thriller, The game ends (1975).

Despite being dubbed Angelina’s godfather, the Swiss actor admitted later that when he grew up, he no longer maintained a close relationship with his godchild. According to Mail Online, Maximilian recalled the famous quote: “When Angelina Jolie was a child, I held her in my arms, but today she probably doesn’t even know who I am.”
After the baptism in 1975, Angelina and Maximilian were never photographed together. In addition, the actress has never commented on the godfather. However, he has a close relationship with his godmother, Jacqueline Bisset.

On February 1, 2014, Maximilian sadly passed away at the age of 83 in Innsbruck, Austria. According to his agent, he is suffering from a “sudden and serious illness”. Waltraud Haas, Christian Wolff, Karl Spiehs, Lawrence David Foldes, Elisabeth Endriss and Peter Kaiser were present at the star’s funeral.

Maximilian is survived by her daughter Nastassja from her first marriage to Russian actress Natalya Andrejchenko. At the time of his death, the 83-year-old was married to German opera singer Iva Mihanović.
