Angie Harmon Says She Doesn't Get the Comeback of Mom Jeans: 'Hated 'Em Then, Hate 'Em Now' (Exclusive)

‘I’m boyfriend jeans all day – with a collared shirt. It’s my signature,” the actress and former model told PEOPLE

Angie Harmon may be a mother of three, but she definitely doesn’t like mom jeans.

“I hated them then. I hate them now!” the Buried at Barstow star, 51, speaks exclusively to PEOPLE.

Although her daughters Emery, 14, Avery, 18, and Finley, 20, have pushed her to wear more modern clothes, Harmon says she’s more of a “classic style girl.”

“I mean, I’m boyfriend jeans all day — with a collared shirt. That’s my signature.”

As for her mini-girls, “I mean, they don’t wear clothes,” she jokes. “I say, ‘That’s not a shirt, that’s a belt. I appreciated his ingenuity, but no, go put something on.’ But I think it’s funny that all these teenage girls dress like us in the 80s and how they brought back jeans.”

As a single mom, Harmon says she also can’t feel comfortable in some of the more feminine styles women wear in Charlotte, North Carolina, where her family lives, since she does a lot of the heavy lifting around the house herself. .

“They wear dresses during the day and I’m just like, no, I can’t. No. It’s like a long, shifting situation, that I get and I wish I could do it, but I put it on and I feel burdened,” the former Law and order the actress shares. “I don’t feel like there’s anything I can do.”

“And PS, these are also women who don’t have to lift 60 pound bags of dog food, you know what I mean?” adds the star. “So my lifestyle is more about boyfriend jeans or skinny jeans, or God forbid, high-waisted barrel-legs.”

The former model, however, is used to wearing a multitude of styles, having grown up shooting all over the world and gracing the covers of magazines such as Ella, Esquire and Cosmopolitan.

On the catwalk, Harmon has walked for Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani and the king of denim himself, Calvin Klein.

These days, though, she’s not too proud (or scared!) to keep asking her kids for their opinions on her wardrobe.

“I’ll come in and I’ll say: What shoe?” or “Bottom half or top half?” My youngest will say, ‘That’s not my favorite,’ which in 14-year-old speech pattern means, ‘You’re not leaving the house like that.’ And I’ll say, ‘Okay, well, I appreciate your honesty and thank you very much.’ And then I’ll come back and she’ll be like, ‘Okay, yeah, that’s cheap.’ ”

“The oldest, she’s in college, so I’ll FaceTime her and say, ‘Do you like this? And she will say, “Not really.” I’ll say, “Oh, okay. Hold on, I’ll call you later.’ ”
