Bestselling author Angie Thomas on Thursday awarded a Mississippi high school senior a full scholarship to a private university where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in creative writing.
Thomas, who is currently on a book tour, made the announcement via video. Students cheered when she announced Canton High School student Ahniyya Myers as the winner of the 2023 Angie Thomas Writers Scholarship.
Thomas commented, “While reading Ahniyya’s writing samples, I fell in love with her craft. Her brilliance and competence astounded me and I’m sure a student like her was in mind when the creative writing program was developed.
Thomas, a 2011 graduate of Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi, is remembered by the name of the scholarship. The institution announced in a press release that it was founded to help ambitious young authors who need more help in realizing their authoring ambitions.
By receiving this scholarship, Ahniya will be able to focus more on her education and writing, which will help her talents flourish, according to Thomas. He is honored to know that this scholarship could be instrumental in the development of another outstanding writer.
Myers is the fourth student to receive the award, which pays for four years of college tuition, room and board. “Ahniya embodies both the spirit of the Angie Thomas Scholarship and the potential of the Angie Thomas Scholarship,” said Dr. Randall Smith, professor and chair of the university’s department of creative writing. The Belhaven University writing community is delighted to welcome Ahniya to the BFA program, where we support each other in developing our craft, discovering our writing goals, and realizing our potential.
Thomas’ best-selling books for young adults include Concrete Rose, On the Come Up, The Hate U Give, and Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy. Both “On the Come Up” and “The Hate U Give” became hit movies.
