Anish joined the Manipur cadre at the height of insurgency in India’s northeastern region. After being promoted as Deputy Director General of Police (ADGP), Anish was posted to New Delhi as Central Representative. There, he was appointed Joint Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB); he later became Special Director of the IB. He took charge as Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on October 4, 2023. At the same time, he also serves as the Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

He took over the command of the Indian Border Police Force at a time when relations between India and China were at their lowest point and tensions were rising along the border, known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The official press release from the Government of India is as follows:
