Career before entering the major leagues
After completing his formal education in hotel management and catering, John held several jobs in reputed hotels such as ITC Maratha Sheraton and Hyatt Regency in Mumbai. John was 23 when he got his first job. He worked as a hotel receptionist, which put him in contact with many influential people. Because of his tall, muscular body, John began to receive many invitations to model and advertise. John decided to quit his job as a receptionist and start working in a high-paying call center at IBM Daksh to save more money in order to build a modeling portfolio that required a lot of money.

In 2005, John sent his modeling portfolio to a well-known modeling magazine called Gladrags, known for hosting the Megamodel and Manhunt competitions. John was selected as a contestant in Modeling Magazine and he even made it to some of the finalists. After being selected for the Gladrag team, John started getting several offers for ramp modeling and even shot a few ads for several well-known companies like Cadbury, Bajaj and Chungath Prince Jewellers. Before John got the chance to film his first commercial, he had gone through approximately 1,200 auditions. John said in an interview,
One thing I learned while modeling in Mumbai was to learn to accept rejection gracefully. I would go to about 1,200 auditions before I was chosen for my first commercial. ”
A big ticket into the film industry
In 2006, John Kokken received an invitation to shoot a commercial in southern India, specifically in the state of Kerala. While shooting for commercials there, he met several famous South Indian film producers and directors, and John made his acting debut in the Malayalam film Kalabham. After the release of the movie Kalabham, John returned to his hometown of Mumbai and continued working in the field of modeling. In 2009, John once again had the opportunity to work with the famous South Indian actor Mammootty in the film “Love in Singapore”.
John played the villain in the movie because of his huge height, which he said suited him better for playing the villain in the movie than a ramp-walking model. John said in an interview,
As a model, I was considered too big for the ramp, so I couldn’t do a lot of designer shows. But this also became an advantage for me in films because I used to play bad guys in all my films and the South Indian film industry prefers tall and big villains. So here I am, 6.2 inches tall and muscular, and they’re happy with me. I am very grateful to the South Indian film industry for giving me the career and fame I have today. “
In 2015, John signed a contract for the famous movie “Baahubali: The Beginning”. He is depicted as a soldier in Karakai’s army.
In 2018, John Corken got another chance to play one of the villains in the famous movie “KGF”; Chapter 1.
In 2021, John Kokken came to attention for his role as the villain Vembuli in Sarpatta Parambarai, a movie revolving around the sport of boxing.
The film’s director, Pa Ranjith, wanted John to be as angry as possible for the character and told John to draw inspiration from former boxing world champion Mike Tyson. John said in an interview,
Director Pa Ranjith asked me to draw inspiration from Mike Tyson for the character of Vembuli in Sarpatta Parambarai. I need to look like a monster in the ring. I tried to copy his body language, aggression and ferocity. ”
John also played the role of one of the three villains in the movie James. The movie was released on March 17, 2022, and John’s acting skills were recognized by fans.
