The autopsy report of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Rishikesh stated that Ankita died of drowning. The report also said the woman appeared to have suffered blunt force trauma before her death. Ankita’s parents were unhappy with the interim autopsy report and denied performing her last rites until the final autopsy report was released to the public. Ankita’s father spoke about the same in an interview to the media and said:
Her last rites will not be performed until we get the final detailed report. “
However, the family relented following appeals from the local government and Uttarkhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Dhami called the incident “unfortunate” and assured the family that the trial would be conducted in a fast-track court and the harshest punishment would be meted out to the accused. He said,
It’s natural for people to get angry at times like this. The government will provide all assistance needed to the families of the victims. The police are working and they have made arrests. For this heinous crime, whoever the culprit is will be punished with the harshest possible punishment. “
On September 25, 2022, Ankita’s body was taken to NIT Ghat in Srinagar where her body was burnt by her brothers in the presence of a large number of people.

When Ankita’s family made repeated calls to Ankita’s phone number and the hotel reception but failed to reach her, they became worried and registered a missing complaint with the Excise Police. Later, the case was handed over to Laxmanjola police. During the investigation, the police suspected the involvement of Pulkit Arya, Ankit Gupta and Saurabh in the murder. During interrogation, the three accused confessed to the crime and told the police that they threw Ankita into the Rishikesh Chila barrage. The criminal was quickly arrested. Apparently, soon after Ankita Bhandari joined Vantara Resort as a receptionist, she was under pressure to provide exceptional service to hotel guests. Talking to the media, DGP Ashok Kumar also revealed the same and said, “Based on the evidence received, it can be said that Ankita was under pressure for providing ‘special service’ to the guests. It must have happened between them for the same thing There was a scuffle before committing this heinous crime.” On September 18 (the day Ankita went missing), an argument broke out between Ankita and Pulkit over the same issue. According to some hotel staff, the two were fighting loudly at the time. Ankita was then reassured by hotel manager Ankit Gupta. Soon, the three people left the hotel on two-wheelers. Apparently, Pulkit’s friend Saurabh Bhaskar also joined them. During interrogation, the three accused admitted that on the way, they had an argument with Ankita, following which they pushed her into the canal. The three returned to the resort and told different stories to the staff. Soon after police arrested the three, authorities began demolishing the Vanatara resort, reportedly on the orders of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Later, Dhami tweeted that the resort would be demolished due to illegal construction. However, Ankita’s family believes the demolition may have been an attempt to destroy evidence. After Pulkit admitted his crimes, his father and brothers Vinod Arya and Ankit Arya were respectively expelled from the BJP. Besides, Ankit was removed from the post of deputy director of the National OBC Welfare Commission.

After Ankita’s death, her Whatsapp chat with a friend from Jammu went viral on the Internet, in which Ankita talked about Pulkit Arya forcing her into prostitution. Ankita wrote in a Whatsapp message, “They want to turn me into a prostitute… I may be poor but I will not sell myself for 10,000 rupees.” In the chat, she also talked about Pulkit once being in a drunken state He tried to forcefully kiss her. Furthermore, she tells him that one of the guests (Pulkit’s friend) hugged her and asked her to provide special services to him. According to her chat logs, Ankita was threatened by the resort owner that she would be fired if she refused to give in to Pulkit Arya’s demands.

On September 23, 2022, when the police arrested the three accused in the case, locals in Rishikesh held a demonstration to protest against Ankita’s murder. Many civilians knelt on police cars and tried to confront the killers. Some even tried to beat the defendants.

On September 25, 2022, a large crowd of compromised students, political activists and ordinary people gathered outside the mortuary of the base hospital (where her body was kept) to protest against Ankita’s murder.
The crowd then staged a sit-in protest and blocked the Badrinath-Rishikesh highway. They demanded that Ankita’s killers be hanged and blocked vehicles on both sides of the highway. People in Uttarkhand also held several rallies demanding strict action against the three accused. Ahead of Ankita’s funeral, locals showed solidarity and shut down the market in Paurigarhwal, Srinagar.
