Facts/Trivia
- Narang told The New York Times that her grandfather served in the Indian Army. She also said that the sense of military duty is in her blood and she has always wanted to become a soldier.
- In high school, she visited the Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Hawaii with her parents and learned about the tragedy of Pearl Harbor for the first time. The trip inspired her to join the military, and she sent in her application to the United States Military Academy (also known as West Point) that same day.
- Anmol Narang will work to represent her faith and Sikh identity in the U.S. Army. This will also inspire Americans to learn more about Sikhism, the fifth most widely practiced religion in the world. After she joined the U.S. Army, she said
It’s an incredible feeling. It’s a humbling experience and I’ve never worked so hard for anything in my life. Being a Sikh woman is such a huge part of my identity and if my experience can inspire someone else a little bit, no matter what their career is, that would be fantastic.”
- While many other Sikhs have graduated from West Point, 23-year-old Anmol is the first pious Sikh woman to achieve this feat. This means she is the first Sikh to follow Sikh customs while serving in the military, including the custom of not cutting her hair and letting it grow naturally. Since the news broke that Narang had become the first Sikh, many prominent figures have congratulated her, including Captain Amrinder Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab, India.
Congratulations to 23-year-old Anmol Narang, who on Saturday became the first pious Sikh to graduate from West Point. Anmol, the entire Punjab is proud of you. God bless! https://t.co/fZvuo5TNCY
