Anna 'Chickadee' Cardwell's 2 Kids: All About Kaitlyn and Kylee

Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell was not only the oldest of four sisters, but also the mother of two girls before her death.

The reality TV star’s family announced that Cardwell died on December 9, 2023 at the home of her mom, Mama June Shannon, a few months after being diagnosed with stage four adrenal cancer in January. She was 29 years old and the mother of two daughters: Kaitlyn and Kylee.

“Heartbroken, we announce that @annamarie35 is no longer with us,” Shannon wrote on Instagram, sharing the news of Cardwell’s death. “She passed away peacefully in my home last night at 23.12. She fought a hellish fight for 10 months, she died with her family around her as if she won’t and we will [sic] update you with more information as we get it today.”

“We love you all and continue our prayers and thoughts for our family [sic] this difficult time,” she concluded.

Cardwell died on Kyle’s 8th birthday surrounded by her sisters — Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon, Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird and Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson — as well as her mother and partner, Eldridge Toney.

In May 2023, Cardwell celebrated her daughters’ successes as Kaitlyn graduated elementary school and Kylee graduated first grade.

“Right now I’m one proud mom and I also can’t believe that a middle schooler and a second grader will give me a minute while I go cry my eyes out,” she wrote on Facebook along with photos of the special day. “I’m so proud of my girls and everything they’ve accomplished.”

Kaitlyn Elizabeth, 12

Cardwell welcomed her first daughter, Kaitlyn Elizabeth, on July 26, 2012, although she has kept the father’s identity a secret. Cardwell raised her as a single mother until she married boyfriend Michael Cardwell in 2014 when Kaitlyn was 2 years old.

The girl was born with an extra thumb, which was discussed in the family reality show Here comes Honey Boo Boo. During a September 2012 episode of the show, Thompson famously said, “I wish I had an extra finger [so] then I could grab more cheese balls!”

Kaitlyn eventually had her extra toe removed in surgery when she was 4 years old.

Since then, Kaitlyn has grown into a fiery person, and her mom often jokes that she has the attitude of a young adult, not a child. On her 10th birthday in July 2022, Cardwell penned a sweet tribute as she entered her pre-teen years.

“Help me wish this crazy, silly and smart girl a happy 10th birthday,” she captioned the post. “Oh my god, I have a 10-year-old lady, help me, but if it wasn’t for her I’d be a mother, she’s the smartest and sassiest little girl I know and I’m so proud of her… I’m telling you ‘everything that’s 10 goes to 20 , but I love her very much.’

In May 2023, Kaitlyn graduated from elementary school, which made Cardwell emotional at the thought of her older daughter growing up fast. In her Facebook post marking the special day, Cardwell described how she cried watching her girls grow up, and Shannon commented how Cardwell became emotional during the ceremony.

“You must have cried your eyes out tonight while they were singing and on stage,” Shannon wrote.

Almost a year after Cardwell’s death, Shannon was granted custody of Kaitlyn after Michael filed for custody and visitation of his stepdaughter.

“Legal and physical custody of the minor child remains with the defendant [Shannon] and the Prosecutor [Michael] shall not be entitled to visitation as such, unless the parties and the minor child otherwise expressly agree,” District Judge Wilkinson said.

Cardwell gave birth to her second daughter, Kylee Madison, with her then-husband Michael on December 9, 2015. Cardwell split from Michael two years later.

Before Kylee started first grade in September 2022, her mom wrote an emotional post sharing how proud she was of her younger daughter for making the big step into elementary school.

“I got a freshman 🥺😭😩”, she wrote on Instagram. “I’m so proud of my baby because she’s starting first grade, she’s so smart, excuse me while I go cry because I’m getting old 😢.”

Cardwell loved spending time with her daughters, doing things like fishing and rafting together on summer days, and making “table nachos” as a family. They also often prepared food together, including homemade cakes.

Cardwell even took herself and Kylee out for pedicures when Kylee was 5 for a mother-daughter date.

“I would say this morning was good with my baby,” she wrote on Instagram. “we have are [sic] did my legs and went to walmart, put on makeup and had breakfast, i’d say it was a good day for moms and daughters.”

For Kyleen’s 6th birthday in December 2021, Cardwell shared that she got her sweetness from her and her sassy nature from her father.

“Ahhh everyone, I’m getting old, I can’t believe my kid is 6 today, God,” the reality star wrote in an Instagram caption. “but hey i love these girls she’s just personality and craziness and she can make you laugh doing the craziest things and boy does she have a temper but she got that from her dad cause she didn’t get that from her mom she got a cute from me, but mom I hope you have a nice day at school and have fun.”

Two years later, Cardwell died on Kylee’s 8th birthday.
