Anna Hakobyan is the wife of Nikol Pashinyan, the 16th Prime Minister of Armenia, and the editor-in-chief of the prominent Armenian daily Haykakan Zhamanak (The Armenian Times). She gained recognition for her participation in the 2018 Armenian Revolution, which led to the resignation of former Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan and the appointment of her husband Nikol Pashinyan as the new Prime Minister of Armenia.

Anna Hakobyan was born on Wednesday, February 1, 1978 (42 years old in 2020) in Yerevan, Armenian SSR, Soviet Union (now the Republic of Armenia). From a young age, she aspired to become a professional journalist. Therefore, in order to realize her ambition, she graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at Yerevan University in 1997. After that, she studied various short courses at the American University of Armenia until 2001, and then returned to the journalism industry. She received journalism training at local and international institutions to improve her journalistic skills, and then began her career as a journalist in 2003.

Despite having four children, Anna Hakobyan and Nikol Pashinyan did not officially marry until 2018. They were legally married on May 8, 2018, when Nikol Pashinyan was elected Prime Minister of Armenia. They have four children together – three daughters, Mariam, Shushan and April, and one son, Ashot Pashinyan (born in 2000), who currently serves in the Armenian army.
Profession
She worked as a journalist at the Armenian Times from 2003 to 2008. She took over as editor-in-chief of the newspaper temporarily after Nikol Pashinyan (the previous editor-in-chief) was imprisoned for political reasons following the violent protests in Armenia in 2008. In 2013, she officially became editor-in-chief of the Armenian Times, a position she has held ever since.
Charity Work
After Nikol Pashinyan was elected Prime Minister of Armenia in 2018, she initiated the establishment of two charitable foundations, the “My Steps” Foundation and the “City of Smiles” Foundation. The “My Steps” Foundation is committed to improving five major areas in Armenia, namely society, education, health, culture and environment. The “City of Smiles” Foundation is committed to providing professional support services for children and young people to help them overcome cancer.
Women’s Peace Movement
She is also an ambassador of the Armenian peace movement “Women for Peace”, which aims to promote peace and harmony between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as a peaceful resolution of the dispute between the two countries over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The movement is completely non-political. After launching the movement, she said,
Women can come together, unite, raise their voices, work for peace and ensure that no more shootings take place on the borders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Artsakh and Azerbaijan, and that no casualties are suffered on both sides until both governments and leaders reach an agreement on conflict resolution.”
Facts/Trivia
- Since she started her career in journalism, she has actively participated in various political and public events and raised her voice on social issues in Armenia. She also participated in the 2018 Armenian Velvet Revolution, which was led by her husband, Nikol Pashinyan, then a member of the Armenian Parliament.
- In October 2020, during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, she received military training along with 12 other female soldiers in her class and joined the Armenian armed forces to fight against Azerbaijan in the Karabakh border area.
