The recent book by Letts, “The Ride of Her Life,” tells the true tale of Annie Wilkins, her horse, and their cross-country trek on the verge of death. This presentation is just one of the numerous events the group is hosting this year in honour of the Women Writers of Lincoln County.

According to a press release from the Wiscasset-based association, Annie defied her doctor’s advice to “take it easy” and decided to travel south in mid-November 1954 with her devoted mutt, Depeche Toi (French for “hurry up”) in order to beat the snow. Annie was determined to see the Pacific Ocean before she passed away.

Personifying the best qualities of the American character—determination, grit, bravery, adventure, and good humor—Annie and her canine friends won over the hearts (and media spotlight) of people all over the world.

This eclectic group sparked an outpouring of generosity and hospitality in a world that was undergoing rapid change, the association notes, during a decade when car ownership nearly tripled, television’s influence was quickly growing, rotary phones were widely adopted by the general public, and when people started locking their doors.

Wilkins later chronicled her experiences in “The Last of the Saddle Tramps,” after which she retired to Whitefield. Visit lincolncountyhistory.org, select “Events,” and look for it under “Upcoming Events” to register. Along with the opportunity to make a donation, a form will ask registrants for their email addresses.

Throughout the service, the five-year-old was seen snoring and fidgeting. He also held hands with his older sister, Princess Charlotte, while they waited inside the Abbey.
