‘Appalling’ moment member of ground staff is run over by horses at start of shambolic Carlisle race

The race started at 17.05 but it was immediately clear that something was wrong as the horses started before the man in question had safely run to the other side.

He appeared to clear the starting strip in place but turned back across the track and went just a few yards before the Mike Smith-trained Euchan Falls took him out and left him in a heap on the floor.

Sky Sports and track official Harry Phipps have since confirmed that the man – who got up and left after the incident – is fine.

The course stewards immediately launched an investigation, with the official report reading: “An investigation was held to consider the circumstances of why a member of the ground staff crossed the course at the start as the race was getting under way, resulting in him being knocked down by the Euchan Falls.

“An official of the course, a member of the field staff, the starters and Gavin Sheehan, Euchan Falls rider, were interviewed.”

The incident has been reported to racing officials at the British Horseracing Authority and an investigation will be launched.

But horse racing fans were still distraught that the unsafe incident was allowed to happen.

And they took to social media to voice their opinion.
