Apple Issues Warning About Putting a Wet iPhone in Rice — and Details What to Do Instead

Apple issues a warning about a popular drug used to help a wet iPhone.

In a recently released support note, the tech company explained why putting a water-soaked mobile device in a bag of rice is a bad idea.

Stressing that the act may actually cause more harm than good, Apple wrote: “Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice. This could cause small particles of rice to damage your iPhone.”

The organization also warned of two other ways to avoid helping a wet device, writing: “Do not dry your iPhone with an external heat source or compressed air” and “Do not insert a foreign object, such as a cotton swab or paper towel, into the connector.”

Instead of using rice, Apple detailed other ways to deal with a wet iPhone in its new 2024 support document, first revealed by Macworld.

According to the company, a warning will appear on the device and disable charging. At this point, users should “lightly tap” their iPhone on their fist with the connector facing down, in an effort to remove any liquid.

The iPhone should then be “left in a dry place with little air flow,” according to Apple, for “at least 30 minutes.” After that time frame, users should try to charge their device or connect an accessory to see if the warning still appears.

If the warning does indeed reappear after connecting, Apple notes that this means there is still liquid in the device. The company advises that users leave their iPhone in a dry place for an extended period of time.
