Aravind Kumar was registered as an advocate with the Karnataka Bar Council in 1987, after which he started appearing before civil courts, magistrate courts and appellate courts. In 1991, he started practicing before the Karnataka High Court. In 1999, he was appointed as Additional Standing Counsel, Karnataka High Court, Government of India. In 2002, he became a member of the Regional Direct Taxes Advisory Committee. In 2005, the Government of India appointed him as Solicitor General of India. Thereafter, the federal government appointed him as the Standing Advisor to the Income Tax Department. Aravind Kumar was appointed as Additional Judge by the Karnataka High Court on June 26, 2009. He became a permanent judge of the Karnataka High Court on December 7, 2012. In 2017, he was one of the judges who presided over BS Yediyurappa’s petition seeking asylum. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) dismissed a corruption case against him in 2007 under the provisions of the ICC and Prevention of Corruption Act. In his decision, the judge granted Yediyurappa’s interim plea to stay the investigation. Aravind Kumar was appointed as a judge of the Karnataka High Court to rectify Covid-related cases during the second wave of Covid-19. Aravind Kumar was transferred to the Gujarat High Court on October 13, 2021. There, he succeeded Vikram Nath as Chief Justice.

In January 2022, during the contempt of court case, a reporter from a local newspaper in Gujarat insisted that the court proceedings should be conducted in Gujarati. Aravind therefore rebuked the reporter and said that according to the Constitution, court proceedings should be conducted in Gujarati. Conducted in Gujarati. In January 2023, a bench headed by Aravind Kumar issued a notice to the Gujarat Education Department asking for a policy to stop hazing in colleges. The notice was issued in response to a Somoto petition filed by the father of a medical student studying in Vadodara who attempted suicide after being extensively harassed by his seniors. In a notice, the court ordered,

A sitting judge of this court sent a communication to one of our judges (the Chief Justice) accompanied by a newspaper report highlighting an issue of menace occurring in various institutions in the state of Gujarat. Taking into account the above threats reported in newspapers on January 3, 2023, we believe that the relevant departments should be required to take measures to curb this threat and issue a notification on January 30. “

Aravind Kumar also served as a special prosecutor with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on February 10, 2023, following notification by the Government of India. Aravind was appointed as a Supreme Court judge even though Justice KM Joseph opined that Kumar’s name would be considered later. Aravind Kumar was sworn in as a judge on February 13, 2023, and will serve in the Supreme Court until his retirement on July 13, 2026.
