Ari Smejkal Bio
Owner of Hammer Design Group, 56-year-old craftsman and consultant Ari specializes in furniture and interior design.
According to his website, Ari started woodworking at the age of 15 after growing up admiring the work of his father and grandfather.
His knowledge and skills were passed down through the generations, starting with Ari’s great-grandfather, a Czechoslovak carpenter.
Taner, Ari’s oldest child, continues in his father’s footsteps by working as a carpenter.

Ari Smejkal’s career
According to a July 7, 1996 Chicago Tribune article, Ari and Bob Brinkman were co-owners of Artifactural Furniture in Barrington, which made furniture from salvaged 19th century architectural artifacts.
While working as carpenters for upscale restaurants and theaters in the Chicago area, the two became friends. Everyone brought home leftovers from their woodworking projects, combining the leftover wood with other architectural objects and creating furniture for friends. They consolidated their tool and accessory collections in 1994 and leased a 2,000-square-foot storefront in Barrington.

Hammer Design, a company that deals with craftsmanship and art, was founded by Smejkal. Their website states that Smejkal started woodworking with his father and grandfather at the age of 15. From Ari’s great-grandfather, a Czechoslovak carpenter, onwards, this artisanal approach and expertise was passed down.
As a child, Ari spent hours using his hands, and even today his surroundings inspire him. Tanner, Ari’s oldest son, follows the family tradition of working with his other two sons when they return home from college.
