Ariana Grande Reacts to Viral ‘Holding Space’ Wicked Interview Meme: ‘I Didn’t Know What Any Part of It Meant’

The singer and actress, 31, admitted in a new interview that she “didn’t know” the meaning behind the “hold space” comment made in the now-viral interview she took part in with Cynthia Erivo during their Wicked press tour.

“So I had no idea what any part of it meant,” Grande said Diversityreferring to an interview with the Outlet that caused a stir on social media after it was posted on the outlet’s Instagram on November 19.

Grande, joined by Erivo, 37, and Wicked director Jon M. Chu, continued in the sit-down, “I didn’t understand the first sentence.”

“And then I definitely didn’t understand what was going on and how you reacted,” Grande added, referring to Eriva.

“I thought, ‘Oh what did she say, what did you hear?’ And I just wanted to be there because I knew something big was happening. And I didn’t know how to be there,” she said.

During an interview with Out.com, Grande and Erivo told the reporter that LGBTQ+ fans are “taking the lyrics to ‘Defying Gravity’ and really holding space with it and feeling empowered by it.”

Erivo responded emotionally, saying, “I didn’t know that was happening,” before Grande gently took hold of her old man’s finger and long nail and patted him in support.

Fans quickly reposted and recreated the moment on social media after the exchange.

Grande recalled an interview with Diversity“She said something that meant something to her, and then it meant something completely different to her [Erivo]and then she tried to go somewhere else. I remember thinking for a moment, ‘Am I okay? Didn’t I hear something?’ … because it looks like she wanted to cry again.”

Cynthia Erivo defends Wicked Ariana Grande’s costar against ‘dangerous’ online violence

The singer of “7 Rings” then said that at that moment she decided to grab Erivo’s finger “because I am [thought] you might need something.”

“And I don’t know what that tapping was about,” Grande continued, with Erivo jokingly adding, “Tension, tension.”

Grande then addressed all the memes about the interview that were shared on social media, stating that they were “so beautiful.”

“I feel really relieved that the world had the same experience with this moment that I did, because I felt like, ‘Oh, I’m not broken.’ The best thing is to really hold space with it,” Grande joked.
