Arif Alvi was born on July 29, 1949 in Karachi, Pakistan (age 69 in 2018). Different sources convey different information about his date of birth. Some say it was August 29, 1949, some say it was 1947, and his document says it was July 29, 1949. After his father moved to Karachi, he was admitted to Karachi Grammar School but was later expelled. After his early education, he moved to Lahore in 1967 to study dentistry. Alvi graduated from De’Montmorency School of Dentistry and received a Master’s Degree in Prosthodontics from the University of Michigan in 1975. He received his Master of Orthodontics from the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, California. Later, he established Alvi Dental Hospital in Pakistan.

Alvi’s religion and nationality are Pakistani. His father, Habib-ur-Rehman Elahi Alvi, is a dentist in India. Alvi’s father moved to Pakistan after Partition and before that he was a dentist to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Alvey has two siblings; a brother and a sister. Alvi has wife Samina Alvi and four children – 3 daughters namely Naima Alvi Bawany, Marhama Alvi Shah and Radhia Alvi Sumar; and a son.
Career
Alvi served as President of the First Pakistan International Dental Congress in 1981 and the Third Pakistan International Dental Congress in 1987. Later in 1997, he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. The constitution of the Pakistan Dental Association was drawn up by him before he ran for the presidency.
political career
His political career was quite eventful. He started out as a polling agent and soon aligned himself with a religious party. Alvi has been interested in politics since his bachelor’s degree, when he aligned himself with Islam Jamiat Taraba. In 1979, Alvi lost his seat in the Sindh Assembly. Thereafter, he quit the JI party and joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in 1996. He eventually became the president of PTI Sindh chapter. In 2001, he was even elected as the Vice President of PTI. Alvi was defeated twice in the parliamentary elections in Pakistan’s Sindh province; served as PTI secretary-general in 1997 and 2002. He served as the Secretary-General of PTI from 2006 to 2013. Most recently, in 2018, he was re-elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan as a PTI candidate. He was also now elected as the 13th President of Pakistan in September 2018.
