Asad Rauf is a Pakistani cricketer and former umpire who served as a member of the ICC’s Elite Umpires Panel from 2006 to 2013. He died of cardiac arrest on September 14, 2022, in Lahore.

Asad played domestic cricket for teams such as State Bank of Pakistan (1983-1991), Lahore (1983-84), Pakistan Railways (1981-1983) and University of Pakistan (1977-78). He is a right-handed batsman and right-arm off-spin bowler. He made his first-class cricket debut on 4 November 1977 in a match between University of Pakistan and Habib Bank Limited. His last appearance in a first-class match was on October 28, 1990, between the State Bank of Pakistan and the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation. His debut in the roster was on March 17, 1981 in a match between Pakistan Railways and Home Building Finance Corporation. His last first-class match was on October 2, 1991, against State Bank of Pakistan and Pakistan National Shipping Lines.

Assad became a referee in 1998. In 2004, he became a member of the International Referee Panel. His first ODI match as an umpire was between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2000. In 2005, he umpired the first Test match between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. His first T20 match as an umpire was India’s match against Afghanistan in 2012. He officiated the last IPL match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2013 in Hyderabad. In 2006, he was included in the elite panel of ICC referees in the United Arab Emirates. During his officiating career, he officiated 47 Tests, 98 One-Day Internationals and 23 Twenty20 Internationals.

In 2012, Mumbai-based model Leena Kapoor filed an FIR against Asad, alleging sexual exploitation. She stated in the FIR that Asad did not fulfill his promise to marry her after six months of dating. After the complaint, she also shared some intimate photos of her and Assad. In the FIR, she further stated,
He told me about his marriage and said his wife lived somewhere in Lahore, Pakistan. But he said he was a Muslim and could marry twice. He also said that his wife and children would come to our wedding. “
Later, Assad said in an interview that he was not in a relationship with her and that their photos were taken after Lena claimed to be one of his fans. He further added that she did all this to gain fame. In the interview, he further stated,
I am 56 years old, happily married with two children, how could I agree to marry someone else at my age. I don’t know why she did this, but if she continues to defame me and cause pain to me and my family, I will take legal action against her. The accusations she made were ridiculous and she made up the story just to gain cheap publicity and fame. ”
Participate in IPL fixed-point repair
In 2013, Asad’s name was involved in an IPL penalty shootout, after which the ICC dropped him from the match officials panel for the 2013 Champions Trophy. On September 21, 2013, Mumbai police investigated him for illegal gambling, cheating and fraud. In 2016, he was found guilty and banned for five years by the ICC.

- Assad owns a shop in Lanta Bazaar and deals in steel and metals. He said in an interview that if he were not a referee, he would be running his own business.
- In 2005, he refereed the Boxing Day Test match between Australia and South Africa.
- In 2008, Asad’s decisions in the Mohali Test against Australia were questioned when Virender Sehwag was bowled out by Mitchell Johnson but Asad was De declared that he was not out. He said in the interview,
Asad Rauf likes branded T-shirts, shoes and eyewear. At the time, I was a brand ambassador for Adidas. So shoes, glasses. I joked with him about the shirt and told him not to give up when he hits the ball. Surprisingly, he did. “
- According to some media reports, he continued to smoke even after undergoing two open-heart surgeries.
- In 2016, he was banned by the ICC for five years after being accused of gambling. He said in an interview that the case was charged in 2013 but the BCCI reopened the case in 2016. In an interview, he said all the accusations were false, saying:
The incident allegedly took place in 2013 and BCCI went dormant for three years. They launched an investigation in 2016, but it was a forced investigation because there was no truth in the investigation. They failed to provide any concrete evidence against me. I still have the judge’s verdict in my hand, which says that there is no evidence in this case. “
- In 2022, a video of Assad selling second-hand shoes and clothes at his shop in Landa Bazar, Lahore, went viral on social media. People were shocked to see such a successful referee selling clothes in his hometown. He talked about it in an interview and said he did it to give money to his employees. In the interview, he further stated,
My habit is to reach the top no matter what I do. I started working as a shopkeeper and now I have reached the top. I played cricket and I reached the top. When I started refereeing, I said to myself, I need to reach my peak here too. “
