Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger’s Relationship: A Look Back

Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger have known each other since 2010.

The professional soccer players met for the first time when they both played for the United States women’s national team. Almost a decade after they met, the professional footballers got married in December 2019.

“We just feel like we’re kind of coming together as one,” Krieger told PEOPLE at the time they decided to tie the knot. “We feel like we’re in a really good place and a really comfortable place and the years we’re in. We’re especially confident in the foundation we’ve built.”

Krieger and Harris helped the USWNT win the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final, giving America its fourth championship in the tournament. Each of them has two victories in the World Cup.

During their relationship, they adopted two children together: daughter Sloane in 2021 and son Ocean in 2022. Amid their busy professional careers, they made sure to put their little ones first, telling PEOPLE that “family comes first now” after adopting Sloane.

In September 2023, Harris filed for divorce from Krieger in Florida, the Seminole County Clerk’s website confirmed to PEOPLE.

Here’s a look back at Harris and Krieger’s relationship.

Both played for the United States national team

Both professional American football players, Harris is a former goalkeeper and Krieger currently defends for Gotham FC. They are two-time World Cup winners.

The former couple will retire from the sport a year apart. Harris hung up her boots in November 2022 after a 13-year career, while Krieger announced in early 2023 that she would retire after this year’s NWSL season, marking nearly 16 years in the sport.

Krieger and Harris met while playing for the United States national team in 2010. They previously told PEOPLE that they immediately “clicked” and became “really close friends.”

“We always sat next to each other on the bus and on flights, and we just talked about our dreams and hopes and what we wanted to do one day when we grew up. Because we were kids at the time,” Harris told PEOPLE exclusively in 2019.

“The rest is somewhat in the past. Here we are nine years later, and this year we will get married – she said then.

Harris proposed to Krieger in March 2019 in Clearwater Beach, Florida. After helping the US women’s soccer team win the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup final, the couple tied the knot that December.

As for the wedding, Harris emphasized its importance in terms of inclusion. “This will be the first time in our relationship where all of our friends, all of our family will come together to be one and celebrate us on a whole different level,” Harris told PEOPLE at the time.

“I think a big part of our support is from our family and friends through football and this is much more significant, in my opinion, to be celebrated for love, acceptance and inclusion, which is so important in the world we live in now,” she added.

They have a couple of nicknames

Before going public with their relationship, Harris and Krieger kept their romance under wraps so as not to “disrupt” their Orlando Pride teammates and the franchise at the time. Meanwhile, fans were quick to pick up on their low-key relationship and eventually nicknamed the couple “Krashlyn.”

They share two children together

Harris and Krieger have two children: daughter Sloane and son Ocean. They got their baby girl through adoption in 2021, just months before they were both traded to Gotham FC. A year later, the couple adopted their baby boy in August 2022.

In May 2021, Harris told PEOPLE that being a mom is her favorite job so far. “I feel like I’ve had a lot of titles and cool titles — professional athlete, world champion — but being a mom definitely transcends all of that,” Harris said.

“This was one of the most rewarding, amazing experiences I’ve ever had in my life. And being able to do it with Ali was the coolest moment of my life, honestly,” she continued. “We are very, very happy and just glowing.”

They filed for divorce after almost four years of marriage

Harris filed for divorce from Krieger on Sept. 19, 2023, in Florida, PEOPLE confirmed via the Seminole County Clerk’s website. Representatives for Harris and Krieger did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Shortly after their divorce was announced, a source told PEOPLE that “although this is new information to the public,” the couple’s divorce “began several months ago and they have been living apart since the summer.”
