While in college, he started acting in many short films and directed some of them, including Green, which won the Best Film Award at the International Tamil Toth Conference in Singapore in 2012. After completing his college studies, Ashok auditioned for a few films. Tamil films including “Inidhu Inidhu” produced by Prakash Raj and “The 19th Step” produced by Bharat Bala were rejected. He then started working as an assistant director with SJ Surya and played a small role in Surya’s film “7aam Arivu”, playing the role of Suriya’s friend. However, his scene didn’t make it into the final cut. In 2012, his childhood photos were used to depict the youth of Ajith Kumar’s character in Chakri Toleti’s Tamil film Billa 2 Version. The same year, he tried unsuccessfully to audition for a role in the Tamil film Pizza. Later, a Tamil film director named “Nalan Kumarasamy” saw Ashok Selvan in a TV commercial and invited him to play the role of Kesavan in his black comedy film “Soodhu Kavvum” (2013) opposite Vijay Sethupathi , Bobby Simha and Sanchita Shetty star together. Soodhu Kavvum was reportedly a commercial success.

In 2013, Ashok starred in the psychological thriller “Pizza II: The Villa” directed by Deepan Chakravarthy. In this film, Ashok plays a British novel writer named Jabin M. Jose. The story of the film revolves around mysterious events that occur in a villa. It is understood that in order to play the role of a 30-year-old writer, he gained weight and grew a beard within two weeks. “Pizza II: Villa” received rave reviews from critics soon after its release and performed well at the box office. Some critics praised Ashok’s performance as “brilliant”.

In 2014, Ashok acted in the Tamil film “Thegidi”, a murder mystery film directed by P. Ramesh. In the film, Ashok plays a detective named Vetri, paired opposite Janani Iyer. In 2017, Ashok starred in the film Kootathil Oruthan, which narrated the love story of a MLA. His 2018 film Sila Samayangalil, directed by Priyadharshan, released on Netflix and was a Golden Globe finalist that same year.
