Ashoka (1962 – 2022) was an Indian film director. He works mainly in Malayalam cinema. During his filmmaking career, he directed more than 130 Malayalam films. He passed away on September 26, 2022 in Kochi, India due to multiple health issues. He lives in Singapore with his family, where he manages a software company. He was transferred to India from Singapore a few months before his death and was under medical supervision at a hospital in Kochi.

Ashoka started working in the Malayalam film industry after completing his higher education. He started working as an assistant director under the supervision of late film producer J. Sasikumar. In the late 1980s, he became an independent director and began directing Malayalam films. He made his directorial debut in 1989 with the film Varnam, starring Malayalam actors Jayaram, Ranjini and Suresh Gopi.
He became popular in the Malayalam film industry in the early 1990s with hits such as “Saandhram” (1990), “Mookilla Rajyathu” (1991) and “Aacharyan” (1993). He achieved great commercial fame and critical success with these films. Ashoka is reportedly directing the film primarily with Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi. In 1990, he directed the film Saandram starring Suresh Gopi and Parvathy. He co-directed the film with filmmaker Thaha. In the film, Suresh Gopi and Parvathy play a married couple who are haunted by a dangerous man while the couple is on their honeymoon.
Later, he made the TV movie Kanappurangal, which won the prestigious Kerala Film Award. In 1993, he made the Malayalam film “Aacharyan”, which was written by journalist script writer B Jayachandran.
In 1991, he directed the Malayalam film Mookkilla Rajyathu, which was a huge success. The film is hailed as the best comedy film in the Malayalam film industry. The film stars Thilakan, Jagashi Srikumar, Mukesh and Thilakan. The plot of the film revolves around the story of four people who escaped from a mental hospital and struggled to survive in the outside world.
In 2003, his TV series Melody of Loneliness won the Kerala State Award soon after its release by the Government of Kerala.

Facts/Trivia
- Thereafter, he stopped his filmmaking career and moved to Singapore after getting married. In Singapore, he founded his own software company and began serving as a director. The management of the company is handled by his family.
