After their first meeting, they didn’t see each other for several months. Ashutosh later attended a Diwali party held at the house of Indian director Ravi Rai, to which Renuka was also invited, but she could not attend the party. Ashutosh then asked Ravi to share Renuka’s contact number with him. Ashutosh recalled those days in an interview and said,

He (Ravi) warned me that Renuka would not answer unknown numbers or check her phone after 10 pm. He is right. I left a (Dussehra) wish on her answering machine with my name but no my phone number in the hope that she would find a way to contact me. “

In an interview, when Renuka was asked about the incident, she said:

In October, director Ravi Rai was planning a serial and he thought of Ashutosh, a few others and me. Ravi Rai hosted a Diwali party at his house but Ashutosh could not attend as he had to give an interview. The next day, he called me on the answering machine and wished me a Happy Deepavali. This was October 17th, he called again on October 19th, and finally October 20th, 1998. “

After hearing his voice message, Renuka called him back and they chatted for an hour. They then started talking on the phone every day and met for the second time on December 31, 1998. Renuka was a bit skeptical about entering into a relationship with Ashutosh as she had come out of the bad phase of her marriage. In an interview, when Ashutosh was asked about Renuka’s first marriage, he said:

Her past didn’t come up in any of our lengthy discussions, and I had no problem with it. “

Ashutosh and Renuka then decided to get married but her mother was a bit worried as Ashutosh had a joint family and Renuka’s mother was worried about how she would fit in with them. After a courtship of two and a half years, the couple tied the knot on May 25, 2001, in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh. Speaking about marriage in an interview, Renuka said:

We arrived at Damoh Station on the morning of the 25th and the wedding was scheduled to take place at 12 noon. To our surprise we found the entire station packed with a crowd, like at a political rally. In fact, we had to go out of our way to reach the jeep that came to pick us up. Then we stood in the jeep and waved to the crowds lining the road. “
