Her vocal cords, however, were not designed to accomplish it in a safe manner, so she began whistling songs instead of singing them. Her father rented an oud, a lute-like instrument with a narrower neck and no frets so Asma could practise after hearing her whistle in unison.

She used her own memory and musical ear to teach herself how to play tunes she had heard on the oud. Although he was one of few, her father supported her musical endeavours from the beginning. Asma recounts that she wrote her first song in secret at the time since it was not considered socially acceptable for women to compose music in Sudan.

Today, the Mena region of the world, which includes Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, and the UAE, is covered in Hamza’s doodle. Recent Google Doodles honoured Egyptian actress Karima Mokhtar and Saudi author Abdul Rahman Munif.

One of the most influential modern Saudi authors of the 20th century was the journalist and cultural critic Munif. On May 29, which would have been his 90th birthday, he was remembered.

Google created a doodle in April in honour of English actor Alan Rickman, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 69 following a battle with cancer. On April 30, the 36th anniversary of his appearance in the Broadway production Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons), which helped begin his career in 1987, he was recognised.
