Asmita entered the fashion designing industry in 1994 and initially styled actors in Telugu films such as Santhosham, Attadu, Pokiri, Premante Idera, Arjun, Manmadhudu and Gharshana. This gave the designer an opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in the industry and made her the first Hyderabadi designer to enter the Telugu film industry. Recalling her experience in the industry, Asmita said in an interview,
They respect me and my time. I’m not a person who wastes time. To me it is valuable and must be used effectively. It’s been a great experience being in this industry. However, after a while, I started to feel like I needed to focus on my brand. “
Gradually, the self-taught designer started holding workshops and exhibitions every 6-8 months. When she realized that her products had gained enough popularity, Asmita launched her eponymous sustainable fashion brand ‘Asmita Marwa Design’ in 2003. According to Marwa, her brand believes in “cradle-to-cradle” design or regenerative design, focusing primarily on promoting sustainable fashion through recycling and upcycling clothing. All products under her brand are produced in-house following ethical codes and practices. Marwa’s designs for her label were showcased at the 2004 Blenders Pride show, and the designer has been associated with the brand ever since. Asmita’s brand shot to fame after she showcased her first Kalamkari collection at Lakme Fashion Week 2008. Asmita’s Kalamkari collection has made her a well-known designer in the global fashion industry from Paris to Los Angeles, and the Asmita Marwa Design brand has become synonymous with resort wear fashion. In 2016, the designer was also invited to showcase her “Zero Waste Luxury” collection at the Global Sustainable Fashion Week 2016 in Budapest, Hungary.

- According to Ms. Marwa, her grandmother and mother inspired her to sketch and choose fashion design as her career because she used to see them knitting, doing beautiful hand embroidery and painting while she was growing up.
- In an interview, Asmita also revealed that as a child she used to play with fabrics and embellish sarees in different ways, which further motivated her to take up fashion designing.
- The Indian fashion designer didn’t have any formal qualifications from fashion school because apparently she wanted to study abroad but couldn’t get a visa.
