Aspiring Model and Boyfriend Shot Near Parking Lot of Home Depot in Brooklyn

The incident allegedly occurred after an argument with an unknown man over a parking space

An aspiring model and her boyfriend were injured in a shooting in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday.

Cordel McDuffie told ABC7 that he and his girlfriend, Imani Sharpless, were near the Home Depot parking lot when they got into an argument with an unidentified man over a parking space.

“He was trying to get into a parking space … I pulled up behind the guy, he had to back up and I was obstructing him trying to get away,” McDuffie, 35, told the news outlet. “I didn’t catch that. I honked for a second and we exchanged words.”

After he and Sharpless, 26, left the store around 12:15 p.m., he says an unidentified man pulled up next to them and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

An NYPD spokesperson confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement that officers responded to a 911 call about two people shot at Willoughby Avenue and Sanford Street around 12:16 p.m.

According to their statement, upon arrival, McDuffie was “conscious and alert with a gunshot wound to the right knee” and Sharpless was “unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head.” The two were taken to Kings County Hospital, where McDuffie remains in stable condition and Sharpless in critical condition.

While no arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing, the department shared with PEOPLE in a statement that “the offender is described as a male, dark complexion, approximately 5′ 6″, 160 pounds, wearing a white shirt, red hat, black jeans and fled south on Nostrand Avenue on foot.”

Witness Stacee Glen (40) said. The New York Daily News that she saw the incident. “The guy pulls them over, starts shooting at them,” Glen said, adding that she heard McDuffie scream, “I gave him a parking spot” after the incident.

McDuffie described Sharpless as “one of the nicest people, she loves kids, she’s full of life, she’s just a good person” in an interview with ABC7. He said to the outlet that “this is happening because of something so tiny it’s devastating.”

Speaking about the extent of Sharpless’ injuries, Sharpless’ cousin, Patrick Sharpless, said The New York Daily News that “I can’t take the bullet out until the swelling goes down into the brain”. Patrick told the newspaper that his cousin is an aspiring model and singer and that his family “can do nothing but pray”.

“God is taking care of her,” he added.
