Astrud Gilberto News

Bossa nova icon Astrud Gilberto, known for her classic rendition of “The Girl from Ipanema,” has died at the age of 83, according to her son Marcelo. Salvador, Bahia, is where Astrud Gilberto was born. During his career, which began in the 1960s, he produced an excellent catalog that includes 16 studio albums and two live albums.

Gilberto and the “Garota de Ipanema” (Girl from Ipanema) met by chance. The song, first written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vincius de Moraes in 1962, was later covered in English as “The Girl from Ipanema” by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist Joo Gilberto on March 18, 1963.

Astrud Gilberto, who was present in the control room during the recording, offered to sing on the track when the opportunity arose, according to A&R engineer Phil Ramone. He was a surprising choice to sing the lyrics as translated by Norman Gimbel, despite not being a professional singer.

“Girl from Ipanema” became a worldwide phenomenon, selling more than five million copies worldwide and increasing the recognition of bossa nova music on a global scale. The song won a Grammy for Song of the Year, while Gilbert’s vocals earned a nomination for Best Female Vocal Performance. However, Gilberto received only $120 in royalties for his work despite the popularity of the song.

Despite her widespread fame, Astrud Gilberto believed that her native Brazil had abandoned her. The way the Brazilian media treated her affected her deeply, and eventually his own people turned their backs on him. She never performed in Brazil again after her performance there in 1965.

Sofia, a singer and Gilbert’s granddaughter, posted a heartfelt tribute to her grandmother on Instagram, noting how she played a key role in popularizing bossa nova. She emphasized Astruda’s continuing influence on the genre, calling her the worldwide face and voice of bossa nova.

Colleagues and fans paid tribute to Gilberto, acknowledging his enormous contribution to Brazilian music and the many lives he touched during his career.
