Audie Murphy News

award-winning author The creative team behind the upcoming series about the life of World War II hero Audie Murphy now includes David S. Ward.

“Audie battled in two wars,” claims Ward, “heroically against the Germans in World War II and desperately against the post-traumatic stress disorder that threatened to destroy his family, his film career, and his standing as the most admired man in America at the time. He was like a ripped-out Norman Rockwell painting.

Ward joined the project from Arthur E. Friedman and Steven Jay Rubin. He is well-known for his work on The Sting, Sleepless in Seattle, and the Major League flicks.

For The Sting, Ward received the 1974 Oscar for Best Writing, Story, and Screenplay Based on Actual Material or Material Not Previously Published or Produced. Twenty years later, he was nominated for an Oscar for Sleepless in Seattle together with Nora Ephron and Jeff Arch for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. Cannery Row, King Ralph, and Steelyard Blues are some of his other works.

A limited series about the life of actor, Congressional Medal of Honour recipient, and World War II hero Audie Murphy is being created by Arthur E. Friedman and Steven Jay Rubin.

The 1959 Don Graham memoir No Name on the Bullet of Murphy has been acquired by Friedman (Price of Glory, Beyond the Sea) and Rubin (Bleacher Bums, Silent Night). The project’s producers and Graham’s widow Betsy Berry have teamed up, and an adapter is currently being sought.

The show will depict Murphy’s life story in its entirety, from his time serving in the Army during World War II through his rise to stardom in Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s.

According to the creators, the television series will give 1955’s To Hell and Back, an adaptation of Murphy’s autobiography, greater substance. In addition to chronicling his time in the military and his 44 films he did in Hollywood, it will also examine his struggle with PTSD. At the age of 45, Murphy perished in a plane accident.

With Audie portraying himself in To Hell and Back, “they only told part of his story,” according to Friedman. “What turns a baby-faced, 125-pound farm boy from East Texas at the age of 16 into a killing machine in battle and what transpires when he transitions from warrior to movie hero and beyond produces compelling drama.
