Dou began the round on a windy afternoon in north Texas with a 19-foot birdie at the second hole. He followed that up with a 15-footer at the fifth, then blasted out of a bunker to three feet for a birdie at the sixth.
He nailed a 28-foot birdie attempt at hole 16 despite being on a cart path off the tee. He made a 20-foot birdie attempt at hole 13 and then got up and down for birdies at holes 14 and 16. Dou maintained momentum by saving par at the par-three 17th hole with a chip to one foot. He claimed that he made an effort not to focus too much on the leaderboard while racing.
“I can see that I’m doing fairly well. In his previous 17 starts this season, Dou missed eight cuts. “I don’t want to have to know who’s in the lead or how much back I am to get in my head and mess up shots,” said Dou.
Eckroat had high hopes of playing with Scheffler in the last group on Sunday when he left the 18th green. However, Scheffler, a former Masters champion, struggled on the greens and after two bogeys and three birdies, he was one back after 17 holes.
