News about Austin Herro

Austin Herro, a combine guard from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who will play for South Carolina basketball in the class of 2023, made his promise Sunday. He should sound familiar if that last name does. Tyler Herro, current NBA standout for the Miami Heat and former Kentucky Wildcat, is the older brother of Austin Herro.

Austin Herro can still dunk the basketball despite not being as tall or athletic as his brother. Herro can lose his balance in traffic and is a skilled outside shooter. Listed as 6’2″ or 6’3″ depending on where the information on him is coming from, Herro is still just under 180lbs but has a chance to become a scoring threat for the Gamecocks.

Herro led his Whitnall High School team to the Wisconsin State Championship game during his senior season, averaging over 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. In high school, Herro played primarily shooting guard, but he also possesses some ball handling and passing skills that could allow him to fill the shooting guard spot from time to time in the future.

Ford Cooper, a fellow combine guard who is now at Hampton after transferring earlier this season, will be replaced by Herro as the coveted player in South Carolina’s basketball program.

Herro is not expected to see action early in his tenure as Gamecock as versatile sophomore Zachary Davis and seniors Ta’lon Cooper, Meechie Johnson, Jacobi Wright and Ebrima Dibba are expected to play guards. .

For the 2023-2024 season, Austin Herro becomes the eighth new Gamecock from coach Lamont Paris to join the group. Along with transfers BJ Mack (forward/center), Myles Stute (forward), Ta’lon Cooper (point guard) and Stephen Clark (forward/center), he joins freshman Collin Murray-Boyles (forward 4-star), Arden Conyers (3-star combo forward) and Morris Ugusuk (3-star combo guard).
