Awkward moment Joe Cole’s jaw drops on Channel 4 as Graeme Souness makes bold England call

GRAEME SOUNESS has hailed England’s current crop of stars, a veritable golden generation – ahead of broken Joe Cole.

The awkward conversation happened during Channel 4’s coverage of the Three Lions’ victory over old foes Scotland on Tuesday.

Souness – who was returning to national TV screens after leaving Sky Sports at the end of last season – was hugely impressed by Gareth Southgate’s side.

Discussing England’s prospects at the Euros next summer, Souness was optimistic.

He said: “This is the Golden Generation,” the Liverpool legend explained.

“Forget about Frank (Lampard) and Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes. They have strength in depth.”

And viewers couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable as Cole sat next to the Liverpool and Scotland legend.

Cole was part of England’s so-called golden generation from the turn of the century which, of course, failed to win silverware.

And, although he looked shocked at first, Cole could later be seen nodding as Souness continued.

The former England midfielder also admitted “I agree” during the debate.

Souness, Cole and Jill Scott were impressed by what they saw at the Three Lions at Hampden Park.

Two goals in three minutes from Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham made it two goals by half-time.

Harry Kane then sealed a 3-1 win after Harry Maguire’s own goal.

England return to Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy next month, before finishing their campaign against Malta and North Macedonia in November.

Four points from those games will be enough to confirm a place in the tournament in Germany next summer.

Southgate will be hoping his side can go even further from defeat to Italy in the 2021 final.
